Anyone else have issues with mixing multi's w/dedicated?

Hello
One thing that kind of drives me nuts is when some of my games are multicades and some are dedicated originals. I kind of feel like it has to be all one or the other (all dedicated classics or all multi-games). Anyone else feel like this or am I just a little weird/ocd - lol

I do. I think it depends how the multi works. I like how the DK/D2K multikit works. If you've got it set to regular play (i think freeplay is different), you can only switch the game while it's booting. Once the game is up, it's up until you restart it. Multikits that give you a menu of games to play aren't my thing. Less options feels more authentic. I'm a big fan of high score save kits.

I don't have any multis at this time but I have kind of wanted a 96in1 for either my Pac or Ms. Pac. The problem, is what would I do with the other one? I can't get rid of either of them but having one of them multi and the other dedicated would be redundant as would having both of them with the 96 kit.

Yeah, I feel I lose a lot of the authenticity owning half multi-cades and half dedicated. I still dig the multi's but kind of feel like I have to make the whole room multi's to complete the look/feel.

Yeah, I really want a dedicated Commando just because it has a lot of nostalgia for me but I already have it on my 475 in 1 so it seems kind of dumb to get one now. I totally get what you are saying. In your situation if it was me I would probably make the pac a 96 in 1 and put a 60 in 1 in the Ms Pac, or just leave them both dedicated....thats my all or nothing approach though :)

each time I build a 60 in 1 for a friend or something I enjoy playing it, but the games are not nearly as good as the original.

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't mind. I like my original DK and my original SI, because they are games I played as a kid and I like the style. However, I also have a 60 in 1, a candy cab set up for CPS2 games, a vertical JAMMA cab, a horiz JAMMA cab, and a capcom qsound cab set up with a PC that runs MAME, daphne, stepmania, and steam for SFIV.

I guess, that unlike others here, I am less about recreating arcades of the 80s and more about providing a place for my friends to come over and hang out and have fun. My friends don't care if I have an authentic Frogger machine. They like going onto the 60 in 1 and flip out cause it lets them play Frogger, and that's good enough for me.

My gameroom is small until I open up the rest of my basement, so to get a variety that others will enjoy- I unfortunately have to have some multicades. I have a 60-1 running in my Pac cabaret (using a LL adapter, so no wire hacking!), a PC-10 and a MultiWilliams will be added soon. If I didn't have the varitey, no one besides myself would hang out in my game room- and what fun is that?

I can agree that friends/family really love the multicade stuff. I also know my "wanted" list of original dedicated games would NOT be a hit with friends and family. Kind of brings me to another question...who am I building my gameroom for...me or others? I would like to think both so maybe a mix of multi's and dedicated is the way to go. For some reason they still kind of bug me lined up together, maybe I'll do one wall of multi's one wall of classics :)

I have always kept my MAME cab inside in my office instead of mixing it in with the rest of the collection in the garage. I do have a millipede with the multipede kit and a DK with a D2K kit, but the art is staying original.

When the jroc boards are available for a good price again, I will probably buy one for the Defender to add stargate. I don't care for the multi williams panels, so I want a dedicated Robotron.

You make a good point for us guys who have a limited amount of space.

I don't have any classic multis and I'm not a fan of XX-1 setups just because there are noticeable differences from the originals and you can't really configure the game as you would like. Ex. The 48-1 in the office right now is fine for the casual gamer who just wants a quick game, but I wouldn't want that setup at home as it just doesn't feel right when you play.

Though, having a MAME setup is a great option. All five of my games are dedicated machines, but I'm hoping to have the option to plug-and-play Hyperspin in my SFII cabinet. I will maintain all the original wiring and could switch back to a dedicated setup in a matter of minutes.

To answer the question, all of the games should be original (w/ the exception of HS save/multi kits that use original hardware and/or are spot on in play. D2K, MW, etc.). The feeling and sight of a multicade in the lineup does sort of take away from the authenticity and nostalgia factor of one's game room.

Just put your multis in restored dedicated cabinets. That's how I do mine. My multi-Williams is inside of a restored Joust cabinet, and fits right in with my dedicated Moon Patrol. I'll be doing the same with my 60 in 1 in a restored Pac cabinet. My Q-bert is in a restored dedicated machine but it also runs Mike Doyle's multi Qbert kit. I think it depends on how the multi is treated. If it's just a 60 in 1 thrown into a Centuri cab painted black and has that awful Arcadeshop multicade art on it then I could see the problem.

Yeah, I like the idea of using original cabs/artwork. Thats pretty much what I do, well, minus the restoring part. I found I am far to lazy/busy for any of that - lol.

+1 to this. I originally thought I'd keep my collection pure and only have 80's original dedicated cabinets. With the exception of a dynamo I'm currently adding, I have 7 dedicated cabiets, three of which are multis:
Smash TV - Has both Smash and Total Carnage
Star Wars - Has SW and ESB
Pacman - has the standard 60-1

I'm currently working on restoring the dynamo to a SF:CE, but am exploring an option to have it be a multi-fighter.

I think its the normal progression. As you explore the hobby further you find more and more games you want. There's also the factor of visitors asking for a game they remember. I finally added a 60-1 because of folks asking about DK, Galaga, Frogger, etc.

OT for Phet - where are those blue bar-stools from??

A lot of my dedicated games are "secret" multis. You can't tell by looking at them, but with a pushbutton they can change to different games. My Galaga is a perfect example of this. It has a multi-Jamma switcher, and it runs and Arcadeshop multi board, a Galaga '88 board, a Namco Classics Vol. 1, a Pleaides and a Super Space Invaders '91 all at the same time. You push a microswitch on the coin door to change which board is being played. I also mapped the left two fire buttons to "left" and "right" joystick input, so that the space invaders, Pleaides and any other game that used buttons for left/right are playable that way. The multicade control panel is the only giveaway. It still looks 100% Galaga everywhere else, though. Even with as much room as I have, I'm not gonna take up a bunch of space with Jamma cabinets when I can implement the original board sets into a classic cabinet...

95% of people of a certain age remember playing games, not the exact cabinet they played them in.

I plan to buy the Asteroids multigame unit when its ready as well as the Missile Command/Super Missile Attack combo. And my Pac-Man marquee'd MAME cabinet is always a hit when people come over.

Haters gonna hate.

Having every game I want as an original dedicated machine just isn't realistic due to time, space, and money. Mixing in some multi-games to combine several games into one cabinet just makes sense. I'd rather play them that way than do without.
