I have the 60gig launch version and it has finally filled up the drive.
I was going to get a external but have learned that you can not play games off one of these.
So I am looking at installing a new 500g hard drive and looking for advice.
Did you back up the data then restore to the new drive?
Did you format the drive with a computer first???
Thanks

I also had a 60gb and put in a 350gb a while ago. I backed stuff up, formatted the new drive on a computer, popped the new drive in and restored it. It was really easy. You can find information all over the internet that will tell you how step by step. If I remember correctly, you don't need an update folder on the new drive since yours is an older model and has the firmware already on it.. or something? I don't remember exactly why, but you do need it for slim models and not for older ones. There were some things that could not move such as Assassin's Creed 2 saves.. Little big planet maybe? I lost like 4 save files.

I'm in the same boat. I also have the 60GB version and just installed Duke Nukem Forver and it filled up my drive.

I remember when my friend bought a new PS3, there was options in the menu to back up the drive to external drive and then on the new PS3 we were able to import the backup. I also remember that some of the stuff was unable to copy.

Maybe it is just easier to plug both the 60GB hard drive and the new hard drive into a PC and use a cloning program. Then maybe it would transfer everything.

I put a 500gb drive in mine. It is really simple. First thing I did was back up game saves to a usb drive ( use an external if you want to backup everything like music, pics, etc). Once you have your old stuff backed up, pull out the old drive and replace with the new one. When you restart the PS3 it will format and install the OS. Then you can reload your backed up data from the old drive.

Once you have it connected to PSN then you can go to your download list and start re-downloading the games you have bought to the new hard drive.

I did this a few years ago when my 20gb hard drive filled up, although at the time 320gb was the largest that seagate (OEM brand) made. It was way easier than I thought it was going to be.

i replaced mine with the biggest one you can install with out modding the case . A 750 gig and you can pick them up at tiger direct for $100

Yeah it's the 360 you have to jump through hoops to swap out the HDD, the Ps3 is pretty much plug n play by comparison

I did not even think about that

The new hard drive is being delivered today and I hope it goes as well as these posts.
Thanks to everyone, I'll tell how it went.

Wow was that easy!!!!
It took longer to sync the trophies than to do anything else
I did lose some data but not much.
