I just picked up a 'new' TV at work today that doesn't work, but I *really* want to fix it... It's light years ahead of any of my other sets (27" JVC w/ 2-tuner PIP, comb filter, S-vid/Component inputs)... They were going to salvage it, but I ended up taking it home for a mere $5... :)

Moving right along... I think it's a problem with the power supply board and/or a relay because when you first plug it in, one of the relays on the main board makes this click-click-click-click-click-click- noise for about 2-3 seconds, then shuts off. The relay also vibrates when it is clicking, too...

Has anybody ever tackled a problem like this before, and if so - where would the best place to get parts *cheaply* be?

(For what it's worth, the TV was made in '99, and here's the model: http://www.crazyg.com/jvc/av27d500.htm )

Thanks in advance! :)

I've got a 21" monitor that was 2 years old and failed, did the exact same thing--- click-click-click-click OFF.

It's still here, in the original box. I took it to a repair shop, and they just said "Not economical to repair".

I think they are full of it. I'm betting it's an easy repair for someone who knows how.

I can't help but feel that some small part in the power supply/regulation failed.

I talked to a buddy of mine, whom I just found out used to work in a TV repair shop, and he said it sounds like the power supply and/or some relays, too... I checked the JVC webpage, and they sell a part # that's almost identical (i'll have to call and ask about compatibility) for around $35. So, I guess all that's left is finding a local shop that can get these relays and getting two of each - I'll probably replace the relays first with one set of 'em, and see if the original power supply is good, *then* order a new power supply if that doesn't work (and still have another set of relays in case I blow the new ones).

Also worthy of mentioning, at one point, it looks like the flyback was changed (or at least had the soldier reflowed) on this set... Maybe the shop this guy took it to didn't know how to fix it and gave up?

At any rate, if I end up fixing it, I'll let you know what I did and maybe you can get yours working too... Meanwhile, I think I'd best find a place for this tv to sit... somewhere other than right next to that Peavey amp...
