Purely my opinion, but I really don't like Candy Cabs. They just don't have much of a personality to them... seem kinda like mindless slaves in an arcade when they're all lined up. I guess I can see the uniformity appeal, but it doesn't do it for me. Thoughts?

...

I dont agree at all :)
Candy cab is a generic cab for the post part, so having any game in it is cool. To me thats better than looking at a dedicated machine like a Burgertime converted to a multigame, mame or anything else.
Plus they are usually clean and have a rotatable monitor. To me its a perfect machine to have in your collection to convert to whatever you want and a perfect game for someone with a small space.

I think a lot of that hatred is based on your time experience with arcades. For somebody who grew up in Australia or Japan in the 80s/90s, they'd more likely represent the arcade of your youth.

If I wanted a generic JAMMA cabinet, I'd definitely take it rather than a generic Capcom-style upright.

I grew up with candy cabs and never played in upright cabs.
I agree that candy cabs are soulless in comparison to the uprights, poor or no artwork, marquees and stuff, but they seem more comfortable to play,
I wouldnt like to play my games for 2-3 hours in stand up position

Personally,
While I believe that classics are more artistic and more fun than most newer style games, I don't think a game room is complete without having some Jamma games and cabs represented in the mix. To that end, its only a matter of taste. I think the Dynamo HS-5 is the epitome of the perfect jamma cab (which is why I own like 5 of them.) I have a friend that has a Naomi that I have done a lot of work on and would have to say that cab is equally impressive although not quite as versatile IMO. But its certainly more attractive. As for candy cabs, they look fairly plain but perform their task admirably. IIRC they have a 29" rotating screen which is nice. My only problem with them is that I think some of them are sit down cabs which just seems lazy to me. If your too lazy to stand at a game to play, you shouldn't be playing to start with. But hey, that's just my 2 bits.

If you go to Japan all the Candies have bright perfect colors. A lot of US arcade always had shit colored monitors because people never took care of them and even so standard res monitors in Candies are amazing to look at.

I think they look ok when you see a Japanese-themed arcade (someone who has a Neo-Geo and other similar cabinets, sure it looks ok) but if I saw one in Blkdog, ZFCamaro, or TheBasement's arcade room it would look really odd and out of place.

I don't see any problem with them? They look better than a shitty conversion cab or a MAME machine. They are clean - have large monitors and nice sticks and buttons. The are metal, so they already beat the shit out of a particleboard cabinet in my mind. Some of them are generic but who's to say you can't add art to them. The beauty of these cabs is pretty much anything post-80's can go into them and feel right. If you haven't played a fighting game or shmup, sitting on your ass behind a candy, you need to do yourself a favor.

I had never seen a candy cab until my interest in arcade games was rekindled a few years ago. When I first started collecting, I discovered a passion for stg's. My first cab(after building a mame cocktail) was an astro city. I agree that the classics have much more personality, and I have more of an emotional connection to them because that is what I grew up with as a kid. But candy cabs are great too. A whole row of matching candies looks awesome. Besides, espgaluda belongs ina candy cab as much as pacman belongs in a pacman cab. That said, I will try to keep classics and candies seperate in my gameroom so-as not to spoil the "classic arcade" vibe...

oooooh...somebody went there...

For real though, I dig them. I have an old Kural 25 in my work room/"office" and it's perfect for what it is (A compact Jamma cab to turn around and play when I need a quick break). With that said, yeah. It would look way out of place sitting in the garage.

The only complaint I have with mine is moving the thing. It's all metal and the distribution of weight is low. It's like moving an engine block as opposed to a tall cabinet that can be shoved/tilted.

I disagree, i really like the look of candy cabs, especially when you have like 4 in a row...If i had the room i'd probably get 4-row set. I really like the size of the monitors & colors they display. Not to mention being able to rotate the monitors.

They are also hella lot easier to move around/transport!

So far, I have refused to buy any x-box on the basis that Bill Gates has his grubby little paws in it. As for PS, I was never a fan. The PS1 was the death nail of classic 2d games as well as the beginning of the end for SEGA as a home console. PS2 just finished the job. As for wii, I almost bought one on black Friday. The red limited edition was sweet. And lets face it. The Wii is the first innovative thing Nintendo has done since the virtua boy (which I actually liked). I won't say I'm against the new systems so much as I quit being a home colsole player after the Dreamcast threw in the towel.

so you must be a big fan of wii and kinect :)

When I first saw them, I was reminded of washing machines. I've developed an appreciation for them though, and if I ever find a clean one local I'd snag it in a second.

+1

Variety is a good thing, I wouldn't own eight of them, but one would be a sweet addition!

i guess im in the minority. i dont care for them and wouldn't have one in my gameroom.

That is my opinion. At least it WAS until I stored one for a buddy. That little white washing machine looking cabinet with the crisp, HUGE monitor is actually winning me over.

Still think it looks like a washine machine though, LOL

Depends on the candy cab in question, I love em...but that one, and other models are UGLY. Astro City's are nice.

I love the things... I want one but can't find any around here at a good price, sadly. Eventually I'd like to have at least one when I have the space.
