I heard a while back 2 seperate people/groups were possibally working on a excitebike save. did anyone actually start working on such a thing?

I would personally love to get an ExciteBike high-score save rom mod. I think SMB and Excitebike are the two must-have VS. games and getting a high-score save mod for both would be CAKE!!!

Paging Matt Osborn!!!!

It's on my radar. That and Dr Mario are the next Vs games I'd do. Just need to find the time.... New job has me busy for a while.

Thanks so much man! Also, not that you asked, but please chalk in one vote from me for VS Castlevania as well. Because you obviously have so little to do and are totally idle, am I right? ;)

Excitebike High score save kit - make it happen

Hey everyone,

I don't know Matt Osborn. All I know is that he is the one guy who can create an excitebike high score save kit.

This needs to happen.

So, I've started a crowdfunding site to hopefully help motivate the geniousness behind these high score save kits.

If you appreciate Matt's work... or want this damn thing to happen as much as I do, throw some bux his way.

The 2AA batteries are originally just for book keeping, IIRC.

Just like Vs. SMB, you need to change the code on the game to actually save the score, but if he makes it like he did his Vs. SMB, then the high scores would be kept with the 2 AAs.

Ah good explanation. So to play any games on the vs unisystem, you really don't even need the batteries installed? What data is in the bookkeeping (plays, stats, etc?)

Yes, the goal here is to use the hardware that is already on the board. That keeps the cost to a minimum. I strongly suggest that people use the new lithium AA batteries so as to avoid the inevitable dangers of alkalines.

I believe that is right (# of plays, etc). As far as needing the batteries, you are correct. I ran all of my Vs. boards without batteries except the Vs. SMB board, which had matt's Vs. SMB high score save code on it :)

I changed my vs smb over to a cr2032 battery a year or so ago, no issues, saves fine.

Curiosity factor: does this still let this "bookkeeping" function work? What games even made use of this? Was it internal stuff (like credits saving) or some games actually had some bookkeeping menus in them? Cool! :)

I don't change anything I don't have to. If the game is saving some info there then it will continue to. I find unused space in the CMOS RAM to store the high scores to. As for this "bookkeeping" data, that is all game dependent. I'm pretty sure a lot of games save little or no data there.

Wow. Didn't know that he's the ONE guy who can do it.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly have respect for Matt. I just didn't know he had such unique skills.
