I'm interested in seeing one in person, but it seems like the project is dead...I tried emailing the company behind the design, but nothing. Anyone have a clue on what the deal is?

A quick check of the wayback machine indicates the page hasn't changed content since Jan 2008, so that's not a good sign.
Honestly, looking at the page, I'm thinking that in an effort to cover every possible base (they talk about wifi!) they might have made it harder to debug than they originally anticipated. It looks like they had a partially working prototype, but I'm guessing they have not had time to finish the job of making it a product they can manufacture at a sensible price.
