MAME CHD's. They are free all over the intarwebz.

However - some games, like Blitz2K and Hydro Thunder(?) need to have actual HDD copies made from physical discs, as the CHD dumps are known to be bad and contain errors preventing proper or complete gameplay on actual hardware. (Why they continue to be distributed when they are known to be bad is beyond me. I suppose because they emulate fine, and MAME people really only care about emulation gaming - despite the mantra of the project.)

Which version of MAME (and the associated CHDs) are you using? In 0.173 with 0.173-correct ROMs and CHDs, I get the following results:

blitz2k: starts and runs fine; no warnings when firing up the emulation.

hydrthnd: gives a warning for not working due to incomplete emulation, so the CHD is presumed good for the time being.

Also, just to give a brief answer regarding why CHDs (or ROMs) known to be bad continue to be distributed: it's generally because no good dump is available, but having them present is necessary to both the documentation and emulation of the hardware. They're essentially placeholders, which is why there are various warnings at the start of emulation advising this.

Now, if I read your reply correctly, your point was that using certain CHDs to revive original hardware doesn't work in some cases. That one puzzles me, because it should be possible to use a CHD to recover original media. However, if a specific drive or disc is serialised to a specific game PCB, then yes, the CHD image may need to be modified before being written to media in order to work. That doesn't mean that the CHD is necessarily bad, though, just that the game has some form of protection that prevents a straight write of one to the other.

Having said that, I'm not familiar with the specific use case you're describing above. Can you elaborate on it a bit more? I've never owned or worked on any of the machines in question so am curious as to what the issue may be.
