Any tips for building the blue esr meter?

Take your time, and enjoy yourself. I built their flyback tester, had a great time building it. It was like being back in grade school. Love it, works like a champ.

What temperature should my pace iron be set at D? What size tip and would radio shack 60/40 rosin-core solder .032 diameter part#64-005 light duty do the trick?

This is a kit, and if it is anything like the fly tester it should be fun. Put all of the resisters in place and solder, diodes and solder, etc.

I would work at 700 F, and use a pencil tip, .032 dia is fine.

What temperature

you need it hot enough to do the job in shortest amount of time possible. definately dont hold the iron on there more than 10 seconds or the heat can damage components.

usually 3-4 seconds then another second a couple seconds later.

i used to use a heatsink but anymore i just do it quick.

I'm seriously considering picking up that ring tester. Pretty good, huh?

And I was thinking about picking up the ESR one also. Does it test ceramic and mylar caps, too? While I always have electrolytics around, the ability to test ceramic, mylar, tantalum, etc caps in circuit would be nice...

Love the ring tester, it makes short work of whether a fly is bad or not.

Whats a cheap way to get some solder experience under my belt?

Pick up a free tv or radio off of craigslist. Practice taking parts out and putting them back in without:

a) damaging the part
b) damaging the traces
c) failing to recognize polarity

Billy come by the house and I can give you some pointers. You should use a clip on heat sink when soldering those to-92 transistors because too much heat will toast them real quick. I have a one you can use, or we can build it on my bench if you want. Either way I would like to check it out when its done. I have a cheapie capatitance meter but the cap has to be out of circuit which sucks.
Btw, start saving anode caps off those junk tv's you come across all the time. I spent 30 minutes last night looking for one to put on a chassis I was rebuilding for someone. I know I have a handful of them somewhere.....

Im at work today but your welcome to bust the basement door down and have at the workbench.

I will wait... but I am just a little stoked!

I went up to radio shack and bought some pc boards and caps. Thanks for the suggestions. I also found my pack of soldering tips and little nippies.

Can you guys tell what would be the best tip to solder with by looking at these pictures?

Also notice that I have an adaptor that steps down the tips... Is that going to be a problem?

One more question... What the heck is that black rubber square thing in the middle of the shot? It came with my solder station.
