I know you just get a router with a couple ethernet cables plugging into it. Is it as easy as that? Does one have to plug into the Master jack with the other on one of the other jacks? Is there a write-up on it in the manual or elsewhere?

If it is just two, you can get a crossover cable and you won't need a router. Assuming they are linked via ethernet. Otherwise you can get a 4 port ethernet switch for about $20 at Fry's.

Like Ken said, crossover cable or network switch a router is overkill.

That's right - crossover cable. I should be able to pick one up at Discount Electronics.

Don't I have to go into the menu and set one for Master and one for Slave? Or maybe choose a car color for each? Or am I thinking of a different game?

Just make sure the car colors are different then go into the network test on each machine. After you see both communicating you should be good to go from there on out.
