Any reason why a change machine wouldn't be working?

I'm set to get a change machine from an individual that says it doesn't work.
He mentioned that the unit powers on, but it won't accept the dollars when inserted.
Any suggestions?
Here's the message he wrote me describing the machine:
This is a change machine that you would normally see in an arcade or laundry.

The Bad News:
There seems to be a power short (Replacing wire may fix it) but it does run
The bill accept portion powers up but won't pull in the bill (Wire seems to be missing from the side, may be why)
No key (but it's open)

The Good News:
It powers up

Here are some picture too if someone by chance happens to have the manual they could send me to trouble shot the problem.
And also I have not gotten a chance to look at the machine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I don't think so.
When I get it I'll check, but I guess it could be something that stupid.
Hopefully it is and I'll be rewarded for it as well.
Thanks for the suggestion. :)

change machine joke

Sorry I can't help. All I can offer you is a joke:

Question: What's a change machine that is out of order?

wait for it....

Answer: Something that doesn't make cents.

(Cracks me up every time).

(Replacing wire may fix it)

(Wire seems to be missing from the side, may be why)

There seems to be a wire loose/broken. He has made these two statements wich leads me to believe that he has seen something wrong with a wire. Ask him to provide a pic of the wire if he can and be very nice about it.

*some machines* have diagnostics that tell you what the issue is (why it wont take dollars). That looks like a Hamilton brand, maybe they have a computer that gives and error code?

One thing to definitely look for - on rowe machines, the bill acceptor has a light bulb shining over it that assists in reading the bill.

Its like a 194 or 161 (looks like a 44, like a coin door light).

If this machine has a similar setup, perhaps multiple lights, one or more may be out. On a rowe machine, this pretty much halts the entire processing. It wont even grab the money.

When i got my machine, it was "dead" and all i did was change a few light bulbs.

OH and one other thing - there may be adjustment pots to determine sensitivity when reading bills - check that too. Too high, and the unit wont process. Look for Pots...

Thank you to everyone that has put their 2 cents in.
It is much appreciated.
I'm set to get the machine by next week sometime.
When I get it, I'm going to need some direction to find out where exactly these lights are that you are referring to or to simply check the wiring to the bill acceptor as well for possible shorts.
Is there a place where I can get a hold of the manual to possibly guide me through the operations of the machine?

Hi - the lights - they are just small bulbs that probably sit in that housing (on the door) - it resides over the sensor. The sensors job is to read the bill for security purpose - without light....nothing happens. Typically they sit all the way through the bill appartus so there may be a couple. This is for ROWE machines, i think they all work the same (guessing).

A manual would help of course! I am sure you can find one online? I will check too.

I actually found the manual online.
The brand is actually a Coffee Inns CM-222 model.
I live in St. Sugustine and someone I know in Tampa picked it up for me.
I should have it by next week sometime, so I'll update the thread when I receive it and test out the suggestions that everyone has given.
Thanks

These are *Dummy* machines. They have no logic other than whatever is in the bill acceptor.
The DBA is wired directly to the solenoid and triggers directly from the DBA pulse.

The one I have has a lever switch that will cut the power off to the DBA if the coins run low in the tube. This is probably why the DBA will not work.

Just got the change machine home and no where in the manual does it specify the on/off buttons on the dip switch settings on the dollar bill acceptor.
The model of the dollar bill acceptor is DBV-20.
Does anyone happen to have the manual to clerify what the dip switch setting are?

Ok.
So I got the change machine home that I've been writing about and starting going through the troubleshooting section of the manual I downloaded from the web.
I purchased the unit for $20 and the unit initially didn't do anything when I powered it on.
I got to the small motherboard towards the back of the machine and disconnected each of the molex connectors and popped them back in and the dollar bill acceptor lights starting flashing on the front.
From what the manual explained the lights flash when there is a problem.
The problem after that was the bill acceptor wasn't accepting any bills when you placed them in the feeder.
From there I started getting fustrated in part to finding out what the cost was for replacement parts for the machine as well as the manual not really being that detailed on how to fix problems.
Anyhow, I started looking at the machine to see if anything obvious was out of place or broken.
After I gave the machine a once over, I saw that there was a spring that was connected to the solenoid, but wasn't connected to anything else.
So I started looking around for somewhere that this spring would attach to.
After searching, I saw that there was a metal slide that was kinda just laying there with no tension on it whatsoever but it had a placement hole for what looked to be that spring.
After I connected the spring to the metal slide, the metal slide became taunt and applied pressure to the solenoid.
Just for shits and giggles I popped the coin stack into the machine and the dollar bill acceptors lights turned from the flashing lights to the solid lights, which from what the manual stated that the bill acceptor was ready to go.
I thought to myself, you've got to be kidding me, the machine would function if the stupid little spring came loose.
Anyhoo, I shut the machine and tried the bill acceptor and the damn thing works like a charm now.
Who knew a tiny little spring coming undone would cause the machine to fail.
So, I can't complain on getting a fully functional Coffee Inns change machine for $20!
Go figure.....
