MAWS is down at the moment, and I need to check if any other PCBs use the same sound amp as a board I'm working on.

I'm trying to track down a background hum that you don't really hear in gameplay, but you do in attract sound when no sounds are playing. The game is Strikers 1945. The sound amp looks to be a µPC1241H. Was wondering if any of the boards I have in stacks might use the same one so I can try swapping it out. I've already replaced all the caps on the board. Hum gets softer or louder with the volume control.

I need to audio probe the input to make sure the hum isn't there, I guess...

Alot of the bootleg boards use UPC sound amps. You might check 8-liner boards if you have any of those laying around.

What do you use for an audio probe? Something homebuilt, or are there purpose-built units available to buy?

I'd like an audio probe, to avoid having to lug out the bigass CRO to trace a signal thru an audio circuit, but I don't really see them for sale. Wondering if building is the only route to go.

I know you can buy some, but I just built one using a spare set of powered PC speakers that I have. It's pretty easy to do.

I've heard you can do it with headphones, too, but I haven't tried it....
