I went to their store once to checkout an ebay item. Oscilloscope. Wound up not getting it because it was locked in the warehouse and they couldn't get it until after the weekend. And after the auction closed. But they seemed like reasonable people.

I bought an inop Tempest from them and they are charging me a $45 "handling charge" that I am trying to have them waive since I am going to pick it up myself. Here are some exchanges:

THEM:

"Unfortunately we do not waive our handling charge. This fee is not only for the service of loading of the item, but it also acts as insurance for us in the event that the item is damaged while be loaded onto the truck and you no longer wish to buy the item. We apologize for this. We thank you for your consideration and understanding in this matter. Please let us know if there is anything more we can assist you with."

ME:

"I would request that you wave the "handling" fee since I will be the one loading up in my truck. All I want to do is show up with my dolly and wheel it to my truck and load it myself, no "handling" on your part."

THEM:

"Sorry I am unable to waive any handling charge. Normally the handling charge is $75 for freight items but we were able to adjusts since no need on have to prepare and palletize it. thank you"

ME:

"So you are going to load it in my F250 with a canopy on it?"

THEM:

"Please see the dimensions of the arcade. Dimensions 32??L x 26??W x70??H The height is 70" is there enough room to fit it standing up. If not than we would have to load it lying down."

ME:

"What do you think? Of course, it would need to be loaded on it's back. How are you going to load it in my $40,000 truck? I charge a $45 loading fee, mostly as an insurance that you don't damage my truck. Or I can load it for free."

I'd be interested to hear the response to that... it's a completely valid point....

and, not that they will listen, just tell them you will give them the money before you load it, and won't back out if you damage it... lol... that's a terrible reason...

I know that I kinda sound like a dick, but it is the principle of them charging me $45 for nothing.

With everything said, it is MY responsibility to do due diligence and find out the fee ahead of time (mention of a fee but no $ figure was in small print) and the total price of the Tempest even with the extra $45 is still not that bad. I just hate paying extra for nothing!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Good idea!

Here is my latest message:

I will pay for the item before I pick it and load it,as well as load it in my truck myself. With that being said, I see no reasonable reason you can charge me the additional $45 fee based on your two reasons you use to justify the charge.

This is really simple, did they state a $45 "handling charge" in their auction? If so, your option was to not buy it if it was a problem. If not, you are 100% right. I view this no differently than the people that list a low buy it now and ridiculous shipping, as long as it is stated up front in the auction, they are within their rights. (Whether or not this is a "douche move" is a whole different conversation).

You have a point. Here is what is stated in the eBay listing:

" Additional Shipping Information: Winning bidder is responsible for shipping charges. Will Call available for local customers. Will Call customers or those arranging their own shipping carriers are applicable for a handling fee. Please contact us for more information regarding the handling charges."

After the auction I informed them I would pick it up and the told me there was a $45 charge. I emailed them asking why they charge that fee and was told it is because, "This fee is not only for the service of loading of the item, but it also acts as insurance for us in the event that the item is damaged while be loaded onto the truck and you no longer wish to buy the item."

I have since talked to the operations manager who told me it is not their policy to allow customers to load their own trucks (I can understand) and there are more reasons in their "policy" other than the two reasons given to justify the "handling" charge. I was also told it is against their policy to "waive" the handling charge (right!).

I kinda see their point. I certainly will not lift a finger when I pick it up.

I certainly agree with you that it is douchy and think they should list what the charge is clearly in the auction, but remember this is eBay we are talking about here.

Yep, I am just mad I FAILED to read the fine print and ask before what the "handling" charge would be. I skimmed over it and made an offer. I know it is my fault. Just pisses me off that they charge me for, in my opinion, nothing!

That is how they maximize their profits, they count on you not reading and/or not calling until after you win the auction and are committed. Personally if I am local and they will not allow free pick up, I steer clear. Red flag that I do not want to deal with them. Sorry man, that sucks! :001_ssad:

Yeah, I am usually good with reading the fine print, but I F-ed up this time. Still a good deal even with the added fee, plus I already have a buyer lined up so that is good.

THANKS FOR THE VENTING!

:)
