I am not selling this thing to EB games for 40 bucks....

They want the whole thing and the controller. They can bite me.

I tried the Penny mod it worked for 4 months. Now I have the red rings of death again. I am done messing with it.

I have only baked it once after doing the penny fix.

I will sell this thing for 40 bucks + actual shipping, but I am keeping the hard drive and controllers.

you'll get the ps and the console with out the external hard drive.

Anyone interested in this for parts. Sold AS IS... It hasn't been tagged as modified by xbox online gaming. so if your handy

Oh yeah the door sticks. I am so happy I bought 2 of these for my kids. Both have been Crap. Won't make any assurances I have no faith in these things. I have 30 year old machines that are much more reliable.

...And people keep asking me why I don't have an Xbox 360! I have THREE PS3's and two Wii's. Not a problem from ANY of them. And yet EVERYONE that my son knows who has a 360 has had the red ring of death AT LEAST once!

The online experience is really cool, but you pay the price over and over again.

I am really thinking PS3.. but he already has like 20 games for the Xbox.

Are they making them any better? or do they suck still?

Supposedly the ones in the stores now, have board revisions that fix some of the problems of the earlier models. Of course, it's still up for debate if the new ones are worth a shit because they've been out about a year or so. Of course, I'm no expert, so you may want to do a little further research. I want to buy one but I may wait another few months... and anyway we have a Wii and PS3 that keep us plenty busy.

Anyway here's a recent thread over at Digit Press about it. There are quite a few smartass comments here, but if you scroll down a bit there are a few posts that tell you how to find a later revision board. It's codenamed "Jasper." Look at posts 52 and 53.

My friends and I never had the 3 red rings. I'm sure it's an issue, but I can't understand how it is so widespread. I guess everyone else is just hardcore and plays 8 hours a day with it stuffed in an entertainment center or something. I sold mine since I'm done with console gaming but the most I ever played in a day was maybe 4 hours.

The newest ones out supposedly have corrected this issue. They have a smaller CPU with a bigger heat sync, which they claim will solve the problem. I know several people who have had the RROD on the console, but all of them got it fixed for free from MS. I'm still waiting for mine to tank. I have a launch console, and it get's played a few hours a week (and has since new) and I've yet to have any problems with it at all. Sometimes I wonder if people just keep them in to small of a space and they aren't properly ventilated.

Either way, I'll buy another if mine craps out. The games are worth it to me. As for your console...I'll ask around for you.

Owned Three...

I have owned three XBOX 360's. I purchased one on the original release day, then bought the Elite a year or so later, and also have the bare bones arcade unit in my second den. I have never had any issue with any of them. The just donated the original one to the Boys & Girls Club. Still runs like a charm. None of them are in a cabinet or kept on the floor where they can suck up carpet fibers. They have all been in well ventilated areas and I use canned air on the back vents once a month. I know that is a bit extreme, but I take care of my electronics.
I am not saying that Microsoft didn't screw up big time and have a ton of issues, but they are not as bad as made out to be. I worked for GameStop for 5 years and GameCrazy for another 4 years. In the time I was with both my stores return rate on the 360 was less than 6%. Sure that was a bit high, but my return rate on the PS2 when it was first released was 13%. People forget what a piece of crap the original PS2 was...broken door hinges, rom bays that wouldn't open, reset buttons that caved in when pushed..it was crazy

I also have a PS3 (more for the blu-ray movie option more than the games) and a Wii. The Wii has sat untouched for 6 months. Just started playing Uncharted 2 for the PS3. First game for it in 9 months. Of course, God Of Way 3 hits in March and then its GAME ON PS3!! Oh Yea!! Your going to get a workout, dammit!...............oh, sorry, got a little excited there!

Take it easy

360's are pieces of shit don't fool yourself. We don't overuse ours and I'm on my 4th one. What a F'ning joke. Pretty much everybody I know has had the rings of death at least once.

I wouldnt go as far as to say they are pieces of shit. Just had some bad design flaws. All consoles do. Hell even the ps3 has issues. The 360 just had worse luck than others.

I have read numerous articles that the 360's failure rate has been significantly reduced. I think MS has got all the issues sorted out.

If you plan on buying a new one, when you go to the store, grab the latest manufacturing date that you can find.

I have the very first rev of the 360 - NEVER had a problem.
Also - let's not forget Xbox has the RROD while the PS3 now has the YROD

A little history lesson: Microsoft had Intel help design and manufacture the orig. Xbox. When MS was working on the 360 dev - they asked some of my engineer buddies here at Intel to to a look and provide feedback. It was a piss poor design from the get go and MS was warned which they seemingly ignored.

I will however stick to my guns on these 360's ...... they cannot properly dissapate heat properly. The boards get weak and eventually flex causing improper heat transfer tothe heatsinks which eventually will lead to the RROD. I added an extra fan to mine and knock on wood she's still running.

I bought 2 for my kids on the launch date. They basically made it 11 months. both failed in the same week.

Sent both in... and as soon as the warranty ran out they both died again.

I did the penny trick and they went fine for a few months. One still works the other is officially a paper weight. I am done screwing with it.

I will part it out if anybody wants a part of this peice of crap. I will any part you want for 10 bucks + 3 bucks for shipping... hows that... cant have the hard drive sorry. Can't assure that anything works. Even the disc drive kept throwing errors at the end. Let me know.

This is a common problem with 360's and its not just one issue its 3. For one the cooling is inadequate another the motherboard is too thin so when it gets to hot it expands and contracts and were left with broken traces resulting in an rrod. Finally when you shut your 360 off it goes from aroun 150 degrees to like ten in 20 minutes it cools down to fast it always best to let it sit in the dash for 20 minutes after gaming before shuting off. No hope once it has rrod it will again.

The newer 360s are much more reliable, and also much quieter (my original 360 sounded like a jet engine).

There are a lot of good titles for the PS3 these days, so you really can't go wrong with either, although I'd still personally recommend a 360, especially if you're a heavy Netflix user.

in my own words its all about one word "competition" sony and xbox were probably set to release their consoles around the same time but microsuck being the greedy bastages that they were decided they would hurry and slap it together and get it out to the public before them to capitolize. Now if only stern would stop making shit pinballs and crank out something decent for once, i might just have to reclaim my nickname of "tommy" along with many others!

**Off topic rant** Sterns nascar pinball sucks!!!!

Here's the secret for all XBOX 360's old and new, prop the console up on four FULL pop cans.
Then set a 14" oscillating fan to the right side of the console where the intake vent holes are.
Make sure fan isn't oscillating, then turn on fan to HIGH. Doing this will allow air to circulate
on top, below, and through the console. (these 360's actually get hottest from the bottom)

I've had my old 360 for four years and never had a heat problem or any red rings of death.
I've consistently played for 18 hours straight dozens of times and it only got lukewarm.

I know, you shouldn't have to do these types of things in the 21st century,
but I'm just letting you know what works.

Oh yeah, and PS3 has major problems too:

I'm sorry if I opened a can of worms here with my original reply, but this last post is just damn FUNNY! Can you imagine going over to someone's house where they have their game console stilted up on top of 4 soda or beer cans, with an oscilating fan set on "HIGH" next to it. ...Just to keep their game system from locking up???

I disagree that all consoles have design flaws on the 360's level. The 360 was a piece of shit. Luckily Bill Gates manned up and extended everybody's warrantys, but still a lot of people got screwed.

Nintendo consistantly makes good quality systems. I'm not talking about the quality of games, but they prove that you can design a system where you don't have a huge disasterous failure rates. The failure rate on the 360 is WAY over 50%. The PS2 burnt up to the point where most people have owned 4 or 5 of them. The original Xbox bricks all the time. The PS3 has similar overheating issues, although not as severe.

In contrast the biggest problem with the Wii is idiots that throw the controller across the room. You can put your hand behind the system and COOL AIR is blowing out of it. Nintendo spent their money on using smaller, cooler, more reliable chips and released the system at a price point families could afford.

I'm not saying we shouldn't buy Xbox and Playstation, I'm just saying them telling you that all systems do this is a bunch of bullshit.

No, I don't think you opened a can of worms. I just wanted to let some of you know who were thinking of
purchasing a PS3, that those consoles also have their own problems. I guess it's the price Sony & Microsoft
paid to rush these sweet consoles into our hands, in an effort to gain market share on one another.

As far as the silly looking stilt setup, I agree with ya. But it's better than shipping a dead 360 off to Bill.
Besides, who cares what the setup looks like, if I can play COD MW2 online for 18 hours straight; I'm there!

Our Wii just took a crap. I got it at christmas time 2 years ago and it seems that the dvd drive now needs to be replaced. When you put a disk in it will not spin. After i took it apart and blew all the dust out of it (there was not much) disconnected the dvd drive and then reconnected it, it worked for about 30 minutes then stopped again. If anyone knows a better place to buy on other than ebay for about $55 LMK
