So I removed a Centipede CPO using the oven trick. It worked great as usual but left behind a film of sticky gunky gummy black glue from h e l l.

I've tried WD-40, acetone, gasoline, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, heavy duty paint stripper and just scraping like mad but it persists in being slimy glob of goo.

Frankly, it's beginning to p i s s me off.

Any ideas?

I would think a nice strong paint stripper.. not that green orange stuff..
The good nasty checmical stuff would take it off.

Goo-Gone actually works wonders on all of the sticky adhesive I've had to take off of CP's.
Make sure it's Goo-Gone and not Goof-Off. :)

Goo-Gone has worked for me as well, but you have to use A LOT of it for a whole CP. Just make sure you let it saturate for a bit before trying to scrape off.

Add Goo-Gone, vegetable oil and propane torch to the list of failed attempts. I've never had one like this before. Weird.

I don't know anyone with a sandblaster unfortunately. I'm going to run to the store and buy another brand of paint stripper and see if it will help.

I had the same problem with mine. i ended up using a drill with a wire brush to remove the remaining glue and paint. Luis

Maybe I didn't let it sit long enough. I'll try leaving it on longer, thanks.

Goof-Off is the stronger of the two.

Did you try soaking it in a bath of it over night?

The stuff removes old paint and tar, besides adhesives, it always works for me.

Same here. I prop up the control panel so that the surface I'm cleaning is level, then pour the Goo Gone onto it so that it pools up on the surface. If the CP is level enough, the Goo Gone won't run off. I let it sit for about 10-15 minutes then come back and scrape it off with a paint scraper. Then repeat until all the sticky gunk is gone. Atari CPOs are a bitch though.

A note directly from 3m on this adhesive
Its designed to be both heat and chemical resistant due to its applications.
but recomend MEK for removal.
and 30 year old adhesive will be harder to remove.

This for the win! Took it right off. Thanks for all the tips guys! Not sure why i didn't think of it before.

Now I've stripped the paint off the hinges though so I'll need to repaint the thing black before putting the CPO on. Is this likely to gum up the hinges? Is there a trick to painting these style hinges or is it ok to just shoot them from a rattle can?

I use Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) to remove the glue. It's available in the paint section of hardware stores with the other solvents.

If you plan on repainting the panel, Goo Gone is a waste of time. If you don't want to paint it, lay a paper towel flat on the panel. Put some Goo Gone on it. The paper towel will keep the area wet. Give it 15 then scrape with an old credit card. Multiple applications, scraping, then finally clean up with Naptha. It will take forever.

If you plan on painting, use a real paint stripper, not the "safe" stuff - like Stryp Eez. It's gotta be something that will burn your skin. Apply, soften, scrape it off with a metal putty knife. Clean up with lacquer thinner. That adhesive is tough as nails.

Goto walgreen and get a bottlej of adhesive remover. It works great. Apply remover to control panel a couple of times make sure you let set of awhile take a scraper (I used a plastic razor) and scrap the glue off. Then sand and paint.

Hope this helps

Lacquer Thinner, and a plastic scrapper. Once the majority is off, within 5 minutes for a Tempest. Then you can use the thinner, and scotch bright, or steel wool.

Easy peesy.

I use acetone and a scraper. Waer rubber gloves or it gets all stuck to you when the acetone evaporates. I just keep wiping the scraper on a rag or paper towel
