I explained to a fellow KLOVer that I would like to see if a wooden box could be made to fit different marquees to display on a wall or table. I wanted it designed to a light could be placed inside to light the marquee up. Well here is the finished product. I have a guy in my area who I can hire to start making these but wanted to know if there was any interst on this site at all. I do not have a price yet as I am just getting a feel for the market first. Let me know what you guys think.

so its looks like its made out of wood.. how does it adjust to fit different marquees? Or are you saying they would be custom sized per marquee?

Right they are made to fit one specific size. So, Centipede,Black Widow, Dig Dug, and Kangaroo all would fit in one custom box. Same as MsPac,Pac,Bosconnian, Galaga etc

I think you need to make them as thin as possible. Look into LED strip lighting to backlight them if need be.

Yes, we were just talking about LED lights tonight. I used a regular light bulb just for the picture. I never thought about making the wood thinner.. Hummmm.. Thanks for imput.

It would be slick if they could be made out of metal.. a nice aluminum or black anodized would be cool.

Hmmm..Wheels turning...

Not thinner wood but the depth of the box looks like it is at least 6 inches. Make that much shorter, closer to the depth of a picture frame.

Yeah, the Cadillac model could have LED array backlight, and the Ferrari model could have white electroluminescent panels for backlight. The EL panels are thinner than a marquee, the whole thing could be a fraction of an inch thick, incluing a backing. Of course, there would be one heck of a wall-wart power supply...

Oh, longevity might be an issue with EL panels as well. Dang.

EDIT: And there's CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent) too. I think that's how laptop screens are backlit.

Can I see a picture of the one you made? Really cool to see how you did it..

Yeah, I use standard SPF 1 x 4's. I mitre the corners and route a 1/4" channel in the back to accept 1/4 inch peg board as a backer. 2-3 vent holes at the top, hole for a power switch at the bottom or side of the box and a small hole for the cord. Same as my sign boxes.

Same method I use for movie poster light boxes as well:

Very nice Phet, I love it.

I want to do the same thing for playfields, I imaging making a frame with a slot routed in for the playfield to slide in, then another slot for a thin material that I can mount Xmas lights or LEDs to. I will align the lights to the inserts on the playfield and put that puppy up on the wall. Its on the list :)
