Any arcades in Chicago?

Yeah, Galloping Ghost is definitely a good place to go. They're having a 1 year anniversary celebration this weekend, and they're open from 11am Saturday to 2am Monday. Also supposed to be free food, tournaments, contests and more. There's also a smaller place out in DeKalb called Star Worlds Arcade that's pretty good. He's got some classics, pinball, and a few more modern games. GG you pay a flat fee ($15) and everything is on free play, whereas Star Worlds is more traditional, where you buy/use tokens.

chicago proper or suburbs?

havent been to galloping ghost but want to.. thats the only "legit" old school arcade in the area that i know of, besides local klovers of course.. im sure theres some mom and pop stuff..
isnt there a dave and busters in chicago too? and gameworks at woodfield mall.

If you get a chance to meeetup with some local klovers do it. chris moore(cnlmoore) has a nice arcade, so does joe magiera, and michael(zud) should have a nice setup soon, mabye ted(seawolf) too. im sure theres even more i cant remember or dont know about.

I dont miss the stress of the area, but i do miss the people and the abundance of games in that area for sure.

Thanks so much ill have to check out galloping ghost. Im
Staying In the south loop by soldier field.

Gameworks in Schaumburg isn't too bad. Stern is right down the road and they seem to always have an awesome Stern line-up there. They usually do release parties there too.

Dave and Busters downtown sucks, haven't been to the one in Addison in awhile.

Need to check out Galloping Ghost next time I am back home.

I was at Galloping Ghost and it was OK. They had classics but not everything on the floor was working, this may have changed. At $15 to get in the door, plan to spend some time there!

I would welcome you to stop by, but I'm in the midst of major work on the game room area. Fixing the basement water issue for good!

How long ago were you there? I know when he first opened, he had alot of non-functioning games on the floor, but many of them are now working.

I support Star Worlds all the way. They a true collectors and been in busy since 1985. One of the owners Pac Man Pac is a nice guy and kool to talk too. I highly recommend this place. This is what small town arcade should be

I went to Galloping Ghost last time I was in the area, Easter weekend. There were maybe 6 games (out of a shit-ton) that weren't working. Some of the games aren't in as good of shape as say, Ground Kontrol, but it's worth checking out. It's not too far from the Metra stop in Brookfield, and only about 25 minute ride from Union station.

Well I've looked at the map and am going to hit up galloping ghost tomorrow. Ill post pics after my visit. Thanks for all the advice.

i forgot about star worlds, but thats in dekalb, thats almost my neck of the woods.

Joe magiera's, Hans O or Takemans place beats the Ghosts... Sorry Zud, haven't seen your place yet.

mh

Takemans is the shiznit!

FYI Mark, mine is starting to fill up. 4 Pins, Hyperball, and an upside down air hockey table. (Need 3 more people to flip it.) Vids will start coming in tomorrow. :D

Galloping ghost is a pretty fun place. If you just want to play a few games and hang out this is the place for you. Collectors will be driven crazy because all the games look route weathered. Alot of the monitors were dim, missing colors, needed capped etc. Many of the games had replacement lcds in them which I wasn't really impressed with. I understand as a business they use less energy and probably have less maintenance associated with them. I just think it takes away fro. The experience for purists. I was surprised to see a few vector games. Tempest asteroids and a gravitatar that looked emulated. Overall it was a fun time and I wish I could've stayed longer. Stupid job ;-)

I was just at Galloping Ghost yesterday. There does seem to be an issue with games not working properly.

1)Couldn't go fast enough to get into the van on Spy Hunter. Seemed like a pot problem or something.

2)High gear didn't work on Pole Position.

3)Guns didn't work on Operation thunderbolt, but you could use the grenade launcher.

Stuff like that on a lot of games. Qbert in a non Qbert cab was an abomination. So, no real effort to keep things legit here.

On the flip side, I don't know of any other decent arcades and I had fun anyway. I haven't plaid a lot of his games in ages, so it was still worth it to me.

All of that sounds just like an authentic arcade from BITD, if I remember correctly.

A few issues out of how many games? Don't they have several dozen games there?

They do have quite a few games, but they have a lot that aren't working or have issues like I mentioned. You see a number of monitor issues too.

I guess I hold my local Aladdin's Castles from 82 as the gold standard in my mind. Hard to compete with that. Everything new and pristine. I mean back then they were so new and rotated so often they never had a chance to get beat-up.

If you've never been, I'd still recommend it trying the place out though. Still had a blast playing Operation Wolf.
