Ok.. I was working with the settings on my SW to set it to take quarters. I changed the dip switches according to the manual and made the changes in the setup. However, when I turn the game off and turn it back on it defaults to free play. What could I have done wrong? I double checked the dip switches...plugged the boards back in and get the same result...Its also not keeping high score either.

Is there a battery that needs replacing or a writable chip?

Was it originally set to freeplay, prior to adjustments?

Just a reminder...the service settings are there so you do not have to set the switches. You do not have to pull the machine out to change these.

Also, the novram is used for the HS. You can test it through the settings/test screen. Everytime you do, it takes a little life!

I'm sure more will jump in with opinions.

Well the game is 26 years old. Maybe I need to replace the novram. Is that just one chip? And who sells them?

Yeah the previous owner had it on freeplay..but I like dropping in quarters.

Yeah.. I set it in the game menu..and it resets to free play when the game is turned off and then back on which indicates to me that something isn't working right..hence the topic.

Hey Bubba-

If the NOn-Volatile RAM isn't working, you don't need to replace it to change your settings.

You can simply change the dip switches on the gameboard itself to alter your settings. These will be picked up every time the game is turned on if the NOVRAM is bad.

Then you can replace the NOVRAM at your leisure and MY HIGH SCORES will stay on top!!

:)

I went thru the dip switches and set them up..and it still goes to free play. Could they be bad as well?

I have the exact same problem and got tired of looking for the fix so I gave up. I have the SW/ESB from Cowgill installed in mine. Was told to check voltages that supply to the add on board which checked out ok. With my kit there's two NOVRAM chips. I replaced one which should've caused one of the two games to keep HS and it didn't. I'd love to have mine keep the HS.

Mine is just the stock game..and I'd love to get ahold of SW/ESB kit..someday.
