So what's their motive behind these?

I assume the sellers still get their asking price for items, so if ebay is fronting the difference, that's way more than a typical listing fee. So they're losing money.

What are they gaining in return?

PS - Thanks again for posting these.

They do this near the end of most soft quarters to boost sales so I heard. Sellers get whatever they were asking for a price and ebay subsidizes the discount. My friend that works there said they use marketing dollars to fund it.

That makes sense, if the goal is simply to boost sales numbers. But doing so at an overall loss to the company seems counterproductive. (As they're basically paying you to buy stuff.) Typical sellers' fees are roughly 10% of the sale price. So ebay would normally make $6 on a $60 sale. But they're paying you $15 in this case. That's pricey.

Maybe it's just silly corporate math. Ebay has so much money they can afford to do stuff like this anyway. Take a loss in one area, so they can say their sales numbers are up, for the shareholders, etc. Typical bullshit.
