Ok, so I plan to order a switcher from arcade shop with my next paycheck, but I figured why not mess around with the old one until I get the new one...

(See before and after pictures)

After cleaning it up I hooked the board back up, the -5 and -12 LED's were both light however the +5 and +12 were both off...
After a little tinkering I tried it again and the +5 light came on but the +12 was still off, This time all the LED's on the game board came on (1-6) So I broke out my meter and found that the pot at R28 is not working...

Still not getting any sound or video, I assume this is because the +12 is still not working. SO here are the questions..

1. I plan to try to find a pot at radio shack, what should I look for??

2. Where on the power supply will I test the +12 and +5 to see what they are putting out?

3. Is all the lights on the game board being on a good sign?

4. I can here the monitor, however when I power it on and off it does not flash or get lines or anything like most CRT's that I have seen is this normal or should I expect monitor issues further down the road?

5. The test switch (push button) on the game board seems to be stuck and nothing happens with the LED's when I push on it, should I go ahead and replace that too or no?? If so once again what should I look for at radio shack?

I think that's it for now, but I'm sure I will think of more. I really appreciate everyone's help on here, I would be lost without it!!

Your not going to find a pot at radio shack and dont waste your time working on the POS power supply. Wait for the switcher and everything will be great.

I have a known good power supply I just pulled from a Qix. The game has a cpu issue but all sounds and video were working. I agree that a switching power supply would be a nice upgrade but this would be an easy remove/replace option for you. I do not know what the kit costs from arcade shop but I was looking for $20 plus shipping. I also have semi working boards for Qix.

I actually already ordered the new power supply ($39) otherwise I would have taken you up on that....

Anyone have a copy of the manual for this game that I can download??

I have nothing against a switcher but I will always try to repair an original instead of replacing with a switcher. The Taito PS is one of the only exceptions to this rule. I did repair the one in my qix and after that headache (long drawn out learning experience) I decided I would never repair one of them again :) Its just a crap power supply and not worth the time to fix it. If you want to test your patience have at it.

If Riptor says to not waste time on this supply, I will defer to that opinion. However, you can probably find those pots (or a suitable replacement) at Radio Shack. You need to find a schematic or meter the ones you have to see what resistance they should be and find something similar at Radio Shack. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I'm 3 for 3 in RS replacement pots.

Well stated! Taito PS are complete garbage and not worth the effort. It is the easiest conversion to a switcher you will come across. Take the PS out and hang it on the wall as Retro Art, lol :) I have few I was debating in repairing to sell.. but what's the point, it is just not worth it.

Thanks a lot for all the help guys, the switcher is on its way, I was just messing with this original power supply in my spare time for my own entertainment...

I'm sure this monitor isn't going to work because there is no neck glow or anythng and I have no clue where to start with it, so maybe I will just try to find a new one...

Thanks for the link to the manual that was a HUGE HUGE help!!

Will post back with an update next week when the switcher comes!!

I'm near Eastgate area if you want a replacement monitor for it. I need to check the screen burn. From my big monitor sale, the remaining tubes I pitched due to extreme burn.

I acquired a Qix that was not putting out the right voltages. Against every's comments I wanted to try and repair the exiting power supply first. I had tried adjusting the +5V and just didn't have any luck at first. Then I read through the manual on how to adjust the voltages. You must adjust multiple pots to get the voltages on and correct. Once I followed the procedure in the manual, I was able to adjust the voltages and the PS is still working. There was nothing wrong with it to begin with other than it was out of adjustment. Their adjustment design is overly complicated, but if you can get yours to work, you can use the switcher on something else. Because I do respect the users that made the comments, I did decided to not put much resources into trying to repair the original PS. My time didn't matter so much since it was educational, so that was not a concern. So I say to go for it and see if you can get it adjusted or repaired, but limit how much money/time you put into trying. My $.02 anyway...

Qix is one of the games that you want as little burn as possible. The large areas when painted solid colors during gameplay will showcase medium to heavy burn.
