My pole position 1 is having a problem. The game plays the qualifying round perfect. During the race when the car goes into the third turn it looses left steering; it will steer right and seems to recognize steering input but won't go left.. I have reseated the edge connector checked and cleaned the steering optics. Since it works during other parts of the game it seems unlikely that it is a hardware issue but more of a software problem. I am new to the woes of PP and have just started working with this machine. The machine is updated with a new ATX power supply running directly to the boards test points. Let me add that last week it worked flawlessly and just started this steering problem.

UPDATE: just ran the machine through the test mode. The steering values have letters mixed in for the ones position. example: 64, 65, 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d, 6e, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d, 7e, 71, 72, 73, .... HELP!

LOL

Arcade games often used hexadecimal notation (which is what you're seeing) to represent values during test mode.

I think what he means are that the hexadecimal values are scrambled, or they arent going in order like they should be.

If youve already cleaned the opto, I would try swapping out the entire steering PCB and see if that helps.

newbie question to PP. String opto? The board on the steering looks simple enough: A cap, IC, opto sensor, couple resistors. I figured the IC was probably bad but what is it and what do I replace it with? It looks almost like the boards from an atari trackball but the TB has no IC.??????

I left out the 'e's. Steering opto. The little pcb.

Believe it nor not, an old Atari trackball opto board WILL actually work (at least, it did the time I tried it to see what would happen).

I have an atari trackball in a parts box, I looked at it to see if it would interchange. It looked different with the IC but will give it a try.
