Another new DK record (MAME)

I don't get it. If he is this good in MAME why not play on a real machine and really make some noise??

Anyone who has played both knows this guy is good enough to take the world record on a real machine now. I think its pretty cool news.

Unfortunately, I bet it's kind of past the point of media excitement unless he does it on G4 or something like Weibe tried.

It took me 20 years before I finaly got my T&F machine. First off, I didnt have the money. Second, I had no clue where to get one. Before that I was all over the console scores on various platforms. I tried T&F on MAME but it seems to have lag issues.

Give him time. I think he'll get the machine and the record.

Did he take the case off his computer and film the insides before playing?

Lol, then he has to move the camera to face the monitor, then switch his CPU off and on really fast so it records the boot screen....

The people I know who are really good at a particular game say that playing it on MAME is different and it throws them off. Timing is too slow, too fast, feels funny, smells different, all in their head; something. I would think that when you are truly dialed in to one game, things I wouldn't notice become a big deal. It would be cool to see him on a real DK with an original power supply, though.

I feel the same way with NES emulators , they are always too fast or slow and the timing is never right .

He was at Funspot a couple weekends ago, but he needs more practice with the joystick. His timing is just a hair off compared to using a keyboard. I'm sure he can adapt, but he doesn't have access to a machine right now and you pretty much have to have your own with the new submission rules.

Please tell me you're kidding? I personally have never loaded MAME - but I just assumed that some sort of joystick was always used. Is that not the case? Do a lot of people use the keyboard?

I can certainly imagine there is a big difference in keyboard vs. joystick/buttons!

Holy shit! The dude got that score with a KEYBOARD? That in itself should be it's own record!

Using a keyboard is awkward as hell, and takes considerably more effort than using a joystick. No wonder he can't play for shit on a real machine.

Keyboard is the equivalent of an 8-way stick = illegal.
Depending on his technique, he may not be able to replicate it in an arcade.

I pwn Blockout and a few other games in MAME, but could never play them on real hardware, since the controls would feel all wrong.

Yeah, besides timing issues, the keyboard is like an 8-way stick. So if he does manage to get a machine there will be a few adjustments he'll need to do.

One quick question for everyone.

I know us arcade nuts here will mostly say they use some sort of joystick on MAME, but I'm still curious about what most of you use.

I dont use anything since I never play on MAME. But 10 years ago when I tried to I used a pad similar to a Playstation controller.

I use an Ultimarc J-Pac and an ArcadeVGA card. The two combined let you plug your PC straight into a JAMMA cab.

Here's my scratch-built MAME rig, which is what got me into classic gaming/collecting in the first place.
