I found a local guy with a few extra Asteroids cabinets in dire need of restoration & not complete.

Perfect for a Lunar Lander donor!

I've been wanting to build one of these after I had the chance to play one in person. The game is pretty dull emulated without that awesome thrust controller. Brilliant fun when you have the real deal!

So the fun of buying up the important essentials has already begun. Mainboard, Control Panel, Thruster & Thrust Cover have been achieved thanks to the great people on KLOV.

I probably won't detail too much of the build, I already have a pretty good Asteroids restoration thread as it is. Once I get the cabinet, I'll document the serial on it here.

Excited about this build! :big_boss:

Oh, and feel free to support my build and check out my cheap stuff for sale thread! Thanks!

Mainboard

Found the mainboard from Flippers/John's Jukes via this thread he posted. NOS! Woo!

Very happy with their service. The board was tested before shipping and comes with a warranty. Packaging was excellent.

I did have to pull all the socketed IC's & clean the feet & deoxit the sockets when I received it, the board was not booting correctly. I guess it didn't like its travel in the box.

Tested fine in Asteroids after that!

Here's a blurry video of it running with a very loud Ms. Pac-Man playing in the background.

Believe it or not, I ended up finding a dedicated Lunar Lander that was missing almost everything. However, at least this time it was a cabinet I could work with. Only thing left to do is re-build the monitor chassis. But geez, once you have gotten it altogether, the game sure looks beautiful. I did a test run without the monitor, and you can see the game playing, and the amazing low rumble.

Cant wait to play it.

Donor #24,725

Finally picked up the Asteroids donor cabinet, #24,725. I like how someone needed the diode between the anode and flyback. One more thing to add to the parts list.

Who needs an Asteroids cardboard bezel, wire harness or a dirty CP?

If you can, get one of Takeman's power brick kits. Has most everything, brackets, screws, labels, fuse holder the works! Best bang for the buck for eye candy.

I could use the cardboard, mine looks like crap and my 6yr old is begging me to fix the machine. lmk if you still have it.

So I have a complete Asteroids, Harness eaten by mice. The PCB was pisses on, the monitor was sitting next to the cab, which was a good thing I think. So you can imagine what the bottom of the cab looks like. (YUCK) Cab is alright but needs work.
If I where thinking of converting this to a Luner Lander what would I need ??
thanks for the info.

I'd buy a new harness rather than repair and modify the Asteroids one. Them you need the LL control panel, thruster, buttons, and mission lights PCB.

If you want to sell your Asteroids PeeCB let me know.

You will also need/want:
Owl eye coin door
Wood bracket for the mission select PCB
Art for mission select lights
Solid black monitor bezel/shroud
Grey light gray glass for the monitor
Plastic thruster cover

Hey WhiteFox I'm working on the same project, I have an old Asteroids Cabinet that has the owl eyes coin door and like you I've rounded up the repro control panel, thruster, etc. I'm still looking for all the mission select parts. What are your plans for the wiring? Are you going to use the Asteroids harness or are you replacing it or are you going to make an adapter? I haven't done much research yet on this part but wondered your plans.

Thanks, Mike

I just wanted an excuse to write PeeCB.

Melt your trouble vinyl away...

AlienSyndrome posted how he is using Klean Stripper to remove the vinyl off of his Alien Syndrome and I'm really glad he did.

The result is incredible! Just as in his photos, this stuff bubbles up (I also used a heat gun on it) in 15 minutes. Using a putty knife, the vinyl slimes up into a gooey wet ball. Man, this is so much better than sitting there for days with a heat gun peeling that crap off.

A half hour to do both sides. Amazing.
