Another Killer Instinct Joins My Arcade--story included.
This machine has done some traveling.
First a bit of backstory. There was a guy selling games on craigslist around February. He had 4 but only one worked. He had an Area 51 that worked, a dead Soul Edge, and a dead Ultimate MK3 all in dynamo cabs. He also had this dedicated Killer Instinct that was dead. He said someone told him they were all "computer problems". Yeah, not likely to all go bad at once. Well, he wanted way too much for the cabs but I told him i would repair the Soul Edge and UMK3 in exchange for the KI. He said he would think about it. Well about two weeks ago I get a call from him saying if I was willing to do the work in exchange for the KI then we had a deal.
So a few days later I get off work and drive up to his house about 20 miles from my restaurant. After some troubleshooting I found both machines played blind. So I went to grab the chassis out and they were both K7000 monitors. One was very old and had the old elongated remote pcb. It had a blown fuse and when I replaced it other stuff on the chassis smoked.
The UMK3 chassis just had an open R89 and worked great once I replaced it. The Soul Edge chassis is a basket case and I'm still replacing bad parts. So I exchanged it with a spare Zenith K7000a chassis I had instead. I'll work on the other chassis later...
All of these machines actually came from a military base in Okinawa in Japan. The military ended the contract they had with the amusements company and started using someone else. Instead of shipping all of the games back to the states the amusements company sold all of them for $100 each no matter what it was. He bought these four machines. He tried to get a KISS pinball which sold for $100 working as well as a brand new Tekken 4 that was still wrapped in plastic. Never opened, never used---$100. Someone else beat him to those, though. Two of his machines stopped working in Okinawa--the ones i repaired. The KI died after the boat trip back here to the states. The Area 51 was a trooper and is still working.
Anyways, got the KI home tonight, put in a spare hard drive and its playing great right now. It only has a few blemishes on the side art. It's a very nice machine. This is my second one so it is available for trade. Specifically for a Ded. KI2 cab or a Ded. MK3 cab. Or other cabs. Not sure really. Here are some pics!:
