Another item off the arcade bucket list: TV donor tube

I was at Goodwill a week ago, and saw an older woodgrain side TV. The vents were big enough to read the tube numbers. I researched the tube at home and saw that the tube was supposed to be a direct swap for my badly pac burned G07. So next time I was in town, I stopped by and tested/bought the TV. Can you believe Goodwill wanted $15 for an obsolete tv?!? Oh well, small price to pay for a direct swap.

I tore them apart last night, and verified the yoke was direct swap - yep! Went to Rat Shack today to get some supplies, and made the swap . I had to hack off the yoke connector off the pac tube and swap it over. When I took out the pac burned tube, I noticed that the degauss wiring had been cut. No wonder it never degaussed! I put in a new molex plug set so unplugging the tube is much easier. I also had to swap the dag wire plug.

So now was the moment of truth - I fired it up. The new tube worked great! Woohoo!! I still need to rebuild the chassis, but the picture is good.

Regarding bucket list: I have an unofficial list of stuff that I feel need to be experienced as a hobbyist. I've done pretty much everything but owning and/or working in a real arcade.

Once ever

I was in a thrift store over the weekend and was looking at their TVs with this same thing in mind. Most of the TVs they had were 19" and 25" and they wanted $50. I thought that was pretty high.

That is pretty high - I wouldn't pay that for a tube swap donor. Try the free craigslist section or look around your community for an "e-waste" recycling center. There is a drop-off point with a shipping container near where I work, and it is constantly full of free 19" tvs. Only problem is a lot of them get scratched up from being moved around by the other scavengers.
