Another Grail Has Arrived AKA The Drunk Driving Simulator

Well after a few years of not quite so hard looking another of my longtime grails was picked up and placed in it's new home. As there is no way this beast will get past the fxxking U-turn in my stairs it's sitting next to the other the won't fit; the EDOT. For our family and friends, the Race Drivin' Compact is open and ready for drivers. I know it doesn't get a ton of love around here but I have always truly enjoyed both Hard and Race Drivin. Many a quarter went into one whenever I came across one back in the day. It's in great shape all around except it doesn't have the side art, but I'm not too worried abut that. The cab is perfect the monitor has some burn but very acceptable. With nary a scratch on it I'm very very happy to have added it to the family. Now a few questions:

1. Anyone have some side art? :)
2. I have always wanted to hook 2 of these up together for some head to head action. Can the cockpit and compact link up together or do I need a like for like? In the off chance I stumble across another I want to make sure it can be done.
3. I heard there were some different roms with another track. I havn't checked my revision yet, but has anyone tried these?

The wife has our camera, but 'll post some pics soon. Now I'm off to practice so I can start hammering away at that 672,000+ Twin Galaxies score. Woohoo.

1) no
2) no (you have to have exact same versions of code to link up). So not only do you need another upright, it needs to be running the same version. Also linking race drivins is not really worth the money or space (I have done it). You can only link two and the cars are 'ghosts', so no crashing into one another, you can just see the other player in your game.
3) The race drivin panorama and prototype street drivin both have a 3rd track. Its a figure 8 race. Its a fun track to play, but not worth the effort to try and hack into a normal boardset (it has a different slapstick than a normal race drivin)

Have fun, Race drivin is a game that has held up very well, with the exception of a low frame rate, the racing is extremely fun (since its so realistic).

Anyone who doesn't love those two hates fun. Grats on the pickup, if I had the space they'd both be in my place, I loved them. Having to pass on a HD upright for around 100 bucks a few months ago absolutely killed me, I'm jealous as hell of you. :)

Mickey,

Thank you for the help there. It figures they wouldn't make the ROMS interchangeable ugggh. I think you also changed my desire to find another one unless I find a killer deal. The option to play two players and have them race the others ghost will have to suffice for them. I couldn't find the ROM revision yet, however the help system is version 1.9. Is it worth tracking down new ROMS? It seems to be fine as it is and I don't know what other options a newer set would offer. Oh and I took some pics. Things are a little toght in the garage so I could not get some great angles of it.

There is a Hard Driven for sale around here for 150 but I've always held out for the Race Driven. As it has the original and other tracks and as space is limited I figured it would be the best of both worlds.

Congrats - One of my personal favorite games. Everyone that comes over thinks its great too. I have the Hard Drivin cockpit with a Race Drivin boardset - best of both worlds!

Wait wait...you can run the Race Driven boards in the HD cockpit? Awseome!!! Do you have to change anything or is it just a board swap?

It's not even a full board swap. You actually just need to replace the ROM chips on three boards and add the additional DSK board that is unique to Race Drivin. However, one thing to note - the boards are not the same for the cockpit and upright versions.

Race Drivin' rocks...

You're not going to find the side art unless you're willing to cough up big dough for some inkjet repros at mamemarquees (uncut, you have to cut to size yourself)... plus there is no artwork for the sides of the pedestal that I've found.

My compact has the top "marquee" area of each piece of side art preserved...but that's it.

I used to have an upright Race Drivin as well, and it was a huge hit when I had guests over. But there was no way it was going in the basement where I live now, so I had to sell it. :(
