Another Donkey Kong restoration

My DK joystick needs some help, so I decided to swap it with one from the VS panel that came with the cabinet (the DK was replaced with that model at some point anyway).

And I discover that some idiot used Silicone to lock down the nuts on the VS joysticks. A blob of silicone, right over nut and threads (every single one). And oh boy has it adhered.

If it's green, it's factory locktite. They all have it.

No, loctite I'm fine with. It was blobs of silicone adhesive (think clear silicone caulk).

and dont forget to swap the 4 way restricter from the old joystick. dk sucks with and 8way joystick.

Yeah, except the old one had an 8way too. :001_ssad: My DK control panel came with a VS-style joystick.

Rotating Monitor

I've had a couple requests about how I rotated the monitor, so I figured I'd better post about it.

My cab still had the vertical mounts in it, which was nice. I don't have a picture with the horizontal brackets in place, so you'll just have to pretend. The main point is you don't have to remove any of the side bolts when changing the monitor orientation.

The monitor chassis is held in place with four screws. To switch to vertical, the process is as simple as unscrewing those screws, pulling the monitor out the front of the cab, rotating it, and putting it back in. The chassis mounts to the underside of the top vertical mount, but you can rest it against the wood of the cab until you get it screwed in.

I decided today was the day to get my marquee lit. And I discovered that it lights up just fine as long as the monitor isn't plugged into the iso outlet. If the monitor is plugged in, no marquee.

Will a borderline-bad starter act that way? I'll probably pick one up, since it wouldn't hurt to have a spare.

BTW, does anyone else have the urge to replace the 110V-style iso outlet (and the monitor plug) with something else? Every time I see it, it bugs me, since I just have a feeling that at some point I'm going to plug the dang monitor into 110 by mistake.

Replacing the starter got it going. But it seems to have to "try" a little hard when it starts up. Bulb looks fine once it's lit. Makes me wonder if the ballest is a little tired. I'll cross that bridge if I need to, but for now I'll just bask in the glow of my marquee.
