Announcing the Sky Skipper Project!

We are still working on firming up the details around the the US premier, but it will not be at CAX - I'm on the east coast and transporting the game to the west coast is not something I'm immediately interested in as I'd have to shoulder that cost by myself.

Maybe something could happen, but I'd need help.

leading up to the 2017 world-premier of Sky Skipper – both in the US as well as the UK

By 2017 in the US you mean at California Extreme in July, right ??

Thanks Jon - appreciate the kind words - but it is a team effort to make this happen. One person alone couldn't get everything needed done and it's been a task to date. We're moving - slowly but surely.

Nice going Whitney. You're awesome for teaming up with the Nintendo Arcade guy to do this. All I'm trying to do is to resurrect the art for Bucky O Hare ^^

If you are interested, please subscribe to the site e-mail list, as we sent out our first newsletter yesterday (I've included it below) as we'd love to be getting information out to interested parties quicker than me remembering to update threads everywhere. :)

Just head to the website and enter your e-mail address and click the 'submit' button and you're in!

[ Newsletter 01 ]==================================

Welcome to the Project!

Hey everyone!

Thanks for being an 'early bird' subscriber to the site! We are thrilled to have all of you along for the ride and we are excited to begin sharing some of the details about the Sky Skipper project with you.

We are hard at work on the blog site behind the scenes and are making good progress on it. We are expecting to open the site up to large-scale traffic within the next 1-2 weeks if all goes well and we are aiming to have the first several blog posts about the project loaded onto the site at that time so that you've got plenty to read up on right out of the gate.

It's amazing - at the launch of the site we didn't really know what to anticipate as far as feedback goes, but we've been thrilled with the interest level in the project to date. We are sustaining right around 200-250 daily visitors to the site and were thrilled when Nintendo Life picked up the site's launch and broke the news to the world-wide Nintendo community.

It's an excellent (and quick) read and we greatly appreciate Thomas Whitehead (the author) for picking up the story and giving us some global reach.
Needless to say - right after that story broke (and for several days that followed) the website was receiving (literally) thousands of hits per day and we are thankful for the interest!

So with that, we'll let you get back to things and we'll continue working on the site. Keep an eye out on your inbox, as we'll be sending out Newsletter #2 when the blog site "goes live" so all of you will be the first to know.

If you have any feedback or questions, feel free to e-mail it to the site address - [email protected] and we'll get back to you ASAP!

Regards,

Hey everyone, quick (but major) update on the project today.

Alex, Olly and I are proud to announce that we just went live with a completely revamped website (takes the place of the flyer site we had up) and on it you can see a picture of what we currently believe to be the last remaining - and fully original - Sky Skipper cabinet in existence today.

It's this cabinet that will help us restore our games.

The who/what/how of being able to get to this game is an effort almost a year in the making and is something we will detail fully on the site over the coming weeks.

We just sent out newsletter #2 as well, so if you haven't subscribed to the site please consider doing so! Stay tuned!

We've been able to confirm that the game was never commercially released or sold here in the US, so I bet the game you saw was an earn-testing mule that never made it back to NOA. How it got away from NOA is a story we'd love to know..lol.

Yeah - it would have been a piece of history for sure.

There was one in upstate NY on Craigslist back '09, wish I bought it. So I'm hoping that's not the only one left.

Great website update. How many known Sky Skipper boardsets are around ?

At this point we know of and can confirm only 3 in circulation with a lead on a fourth - and that is world-wide.

There is a fifth, but it is in the machine in the picture and is unobtanium.

So - for sure 4, possibly 5.

Oh, I almost forgot - thanks for the kind words on the website - we put a lot of work into it over the past 5 weeks or so.

The level maps are a nice extra. Interesting how the sprites are high res while the background and text are low res and size doubled and thus appear blocky. Popeye is the same but apparently more time was spent on its artwork.

What makes me happy is that now that there is an actual SS with what looks to have 99.9% complete art, you won't have to guess about colours, side art, instruction cards, or control panel designs from the flyer. :)

No mate we got it all, just putting the finally touches together now.
Thanks Chance for your support.

What is really cool, is that consumer technology now allows a group of arcade collector's to finally release of game that wasn't intended for release by the manufacturer. IF, and its a big IF, the Sky Skipper PCB boards ever get reproduced, along with an artwork package, we will surely see a bunch of Sky Skippers get birthed into existence via conversions, complete with their own serial plates.

It goes without sayin that I would add a SS to my collection in a heartbeat. I will be on the hunt for another Nintendo cab the moment that art becomes available.

And I mean, as far as a board goes, I guess I'd have to go PiJAMMA until I could get access to one or a repro of some kind.

When I was on contract at Nintendo of America, I played their Sky Skipper that they had in their smoking room.

I was so sad that it was in the smoking room.
