Announcing: Atari Assault high score save

The release of this is going to be delayed by at least a week or two. Turns out I have a bad batch of EPROMs... so I'm going to have to order some new chips.

I had enough good parts on hand to put together 4 kits, and that batch was mailed out today. And my new parts just arrived, so we're ready to rock on the rest. I'm using some fast flash ROMs on these. They're more expensive, but they've proven to be reliable, and that's what really matters. And they can be reprogrammed quickly, if need be. So if an update/enhancement is ever done (perhaps an added feature) you can send them back to me and I will update them for free (just pay return shipping).

I'll send an email out later today to the people who expressed interest.

Awesome job!!!

What's next? How about Super Hang on or Outrun.

Steverd

Thanks. I have a couple projects in the works, but I've found it's not wise to say anything until they're done (or almost done)... or else you get harassed too much. :D
I've had several requests for Outrun, but that's not likely to happen (unless one magically shows up on my doorstep some day).

What about those of us who run both versions of the game?
I have it so I can play both with a switch to change games inside the coin door. I am bank switching the roms. Plus is cool but assault regular is way more fun most the time.

This will upgrade you to Assault Plus and enable high score save.

There is a hidden feature to my kit that I haven't shared with anyone yet....
It contains the code for original Assault as well. So all you have to do is hook your toggle switch up to one of the address lines and you can switch between games as you are doing now. I'll gladly provide the details to those who want to hook that up.

All of the people that have upgraded to Assault Plus that I've heard from so far have little desire to play the original.... You're definitely the first to tell me that the original is "way more fun".... But the option is still there if you want to play it.

Well for me I played this game alot back in its day and loved it.
When I want to play what I remember plus just doesnt feel right, its not the same game, the classic I remember.
Plus is awesome, but when I have that need to play assault for nostalgia reasons plus doesnt cut it.
And yes I just may be crazy.

So does it save scores for both assault and plus? Same table for the 2 or no?

I don't own an assault but appreciate your hard work and contributions to the hobby

Agreed 100%! Except I own an Assault, and this kit - thanks Matt! :D

Anyone that owns an Assault should get this - it's the best $40 you could spend, and even my 5 year old son could install it (well, okay, maybe with a small amount of supervision...)

It currently saves just the Assault Plus scores, and playing Assault does not affect the Plus scores. I may add the Assault score saving later. Updates are free.

I am restoring my Assault right now and would really like to have the ability to play both versions and save high scores in both. This is a saver for me as I was going to program a set of roms with a switch to flip between the two games. I'll order one but would really really like to be able to play both versions and save high scores in both. Hopefully you can do that soon. I think it will also boost kit sales as even if I did not have an assault I would buy one for the future if it supported both versions with high score save.

Best,

Bill

Not sure if I am just cranky today, but this post really bothers me.
Kits like this are not easy to do and require quite a bit of time for little financial return.
This kit is a great accomplishment and even with limitations as most kits have it is an asset to the community. If it really bothers you, disassemble the code and take a crack at it yourself or offer him some cash in return for his time to go above and beyond what he feels is satisfactory.

Let me appologize in advance mrbill08 if you take this personal, but posts like this are just a pet peeve for me.
