Questions about this game just don't seem to go away and I apologize for asking do much butnim a bit confused as to what version of the game I have. I played it today and even though the dips are set to easy, the second level is stupid hard and when I reach the end of the level, a warning pops up on the screen and I have to fight some general goober that is holding a woman hostage. I never remember is on the arcades or any versions of MAME.

Anyone have any idea if there were different versions?

Today I compared the Mame version to the arcade and it is definitely different. On the arcade version, after I cleared the first level, there was a something along the lines of "warning the enemy has found you" and I had to fight off a whole wack of helicopters in some jungle setting. The Mame does not have this.

Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks

Hey,

this inbetween level is a bonus stage. I don't know the trigger for this state, but I got it on my cab couple of times.

I was checking some youtube vids for handling the end boss on level2. I did not find any MAME Vid with this end boss. My settings are also on easy.

This is a link to my blog about fixing my OW.

I know exactly what you mean. "Warning! The enemy has located you!" The Operation Wolf that I played endlessly on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC had that stage. I hated that scene! It was hard to pick off the enemy without shooting the girl, and using a rocket bomb would kill the hostage (always adding too many damage points, ending my game). The arcade attendant showed me how to beat it, but I was never able to do it myself. It didn't appear every time... just sometimes. Sometimes there would be the other scene with the helicopters on that jungle trail, but that one would usually appear just before the jungle scene.

As you said, the hostage situation at the end of the jungle scene does NOT appear on MAME. However, you can activate the bonus stage with the helicopters in MAME by setting it to the Japanese language version. (The Japanese version also allows you to choose which stage you want to play instead of starting you automatically in the communication scene.) You can also look at the various sprites in MAME (I forget how to do this), and you can see that although you can't reach that bonus level, the hostage-holding bad guy does exist in there.

I had an Operation Wolf machine a few years ago and I was dying to get to the hostage bonus stage... however, my gun didn't work properly, so I was never able to determine whether that was in my game or not. Even though it's a tough level, you should be pretty happy to have that version. It'll ultimately make the game more interesting and up the replay factor.

Edit: According to this YouTube video, it's the Bear Electronics bootleg version that contains these particular bonus scenes. This one doesn't show the hostage situation.

The OP mentioned that his dips were on the easiest setting though, so it's pretty puzzling.

I know for certain that the opwolf ROMs on MAME (World, set 1) definitely do not allow you to reach those levels, regardless of the difficulty/language settings. I think I tried every possible setting when I was trying to figure it out years ago. Maybe the ROMs were dumped from a different version or something? If you go through the GFX (F4 in MAME), you can definitely see the graphics for the bad guy in question at E70 and his hostage at EC0 (color 4 is the natural view).

I HAVE MINE ON EASY AND ITS THE SAME WAY. Sometimes i get that "bonus" round that usually makes things worse lol, and yeah, ive never beaten round 2 because i suck.

Another odd difference was that i had two op wolfs.. one i could select the scene and on the one ive kept for myself it wont let you you have to work your way through each one in order.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I was finally able to beat the end boss in level 2 only to have my gun crap out on level 3. Got it all working again though so im going to try another spare OW board I have, just to see if I get the same results. All I know is that even with the difficulty on easy, by level 3, the game gets super hard, while in MAME, with the dips set to easy, I blow by the game with my aim track gun in one credit. Will report my findings :)

Hey,

one funny thing on my machine is that I can't aim the left 1cm border of the screen in level 1, but on the whole screen without problems on level 2. Do you guys have the same behaviour on your machines?

Just to update, I played my 2nd board ealier today and it's the exact same as the 1st. Hard as hell even on easy setting and the end boss on level 2 always appears. Doesnt bother me as I know how to make quick work for him but now at least I know the MAME version is not the correct version.

If your gun does not work on 100% of the screen the tube isnt dialed in right(colors, focus, convergence) bezel is messed up, of the mirror or tube face is messed up, or gun wiring is shorted somewhere near the base of the gun and rubbing against metal when the gun is in just the correct position, OR (lol) the gun board aka opto board has cold solder joints

When Operation Wolf (OW) was first emulated many years ago in the Taito emulator, prior to MAME supporting those Taito games, I tried to convince the emulator authors that OW played differently than it did for me BITD or on my then current OW (Yes, I owned one for a couple of years). Every upright I played had the hostage at the end of the second level, but it never showed-up in the Taito emulator or later MAME and I never could get it to work in those. I haven't tried it in MAME since .106 or such.

BTW, there is a trick to saving the hostage and it mostly involves shooting the guy in the head (letting him walk into the line of fire).
