anaheim auction

Yes Rarehero and I were there.

He got a japanese Donkey Kong jr (working). That was probably the best game out of the entire lot. I read the other thread about this but I'd still say it was the most interesting game there.

Games were going for very little money, at least the ones that actually sold. A lot of buybacks occurred. There were maybe 5-6 pins there - the ones with reserves did not sell. I bet a lot of the buybacks will be appearing again next time. Number 116 seemed to be the guy bidding up the games and doing the buy backs. At one point he was actually working at the auction. I can't imagine who he thinks is going to show up at those auctions and pay big bucks for those games he bought back. The market just isn't there and probably never will be again.

No classics to speak of other than the Donkey Kong and some horribly mutilated Pac Mans.

What few highlights there were included a Hydro Thunder for $175.

The auction went pretty fast and was over before 1pm.

Rarehero helped me get my ridiculously oversized cab that I purchased into my Honda Odyssey. Thank you!

I couldn't make it... how was the Crazy Taxi UR....any figures if it sold or was buyback?

It's a tough time to be selling games.... the next SA should be interesting. Who's planning on hitting that one?

I'll def be making that one.

There was a reserve on it I believe and it actually sold. I think the guy paid $600-$700 for it. That was one of the few games that got decent coin. I can't think of more than a few games that cost more than $300.

They did have a gigantic T Rex made out of plastic but it was missing the head. I wonder what happened to it....

LOL. I'll give you $50 for it.

Nope....Got the FF at CAX this year thanks to Full Throttle's tenacity and ability to do a 6 hr drive each way to Spokane. FF was on the floor at CAX to be enjoyed by all once the board was swapped out with Krakboi's.

Thanks to eXidy, I now have a donor board and I think have my original FF pcb up and running. I detect the joystick bellows will need replacing soon...ugh.

Thanks for your help. c u in compton yo.

A lot of the stuff there was the same stuff from last time, thus proving the amount of buybacks/fake bidding. From the last auction - some pinballs, Buck Rogers, the Japanese DK Jr., Crack 'n DJ, and others.

Yeah, I'd love to know what 116's deal is. He's always at auctions (Superauctions too), and is often helping out...an op, maybe? I dunno - he kept bidding against me on the few things I was interested in (Crack'n DJ, a Sega Astro City)...and I just wasn't going to play around w/ that. I'll buy stuff when bidding against buyers, not sellers. When we got to the Japanese/Bootleg DK Jr., he was "officially" helping out the auctioneer at that point...maybe that's why he didn't bid against me and I got it for $50. :)

The pinballs were garbage. A few from "Pintastic Pinball" again, and he just bid on his own stuff....the same shitty Getaway and Sega Star Wars w/ $1500 reserves ...I dunno who expects top dollar for these dirty games...they didn't sell LAST TIME, why would they sell THIS time!? I'd guess that most of the people at this auction are semi-regulars of the arcade scene....you can't trick them w/ overpriced garbage.

Anyway - it was fun talking to Robotron Jon and another KLOVr (damn I forgot his name already!)....and I actually really like the auctioneers who run these auctions....husband and wife team, they're very nice.

I stopped by about 30 minutes before the auction and there were only a hand full of non-employee types there. I did a quick pass through and found the same games that were "sold" at the previous two auctions. Not a good sign unless you like shill bidding???

So, I snapped a few pics so we can see if the same games show up at the 4th and 5th auctions then started to head out. I spotted a pin that a buddy had been looking for so I started to check it out. It looked promising but as soon as I coined up and started to play the game, one of the white shirt workers unplugged the game. Could he possibly have been attempting to prevent me from seeing something I should not know about before bidding? Time to walk, not run from the auction!

I get the distinct impression that the guys doing the buyback are in fact not paying the listing/sale commission. I overheard a conversation at the last auction about "we'll work it out later." I doubt everyone there was involved but I can see them letting a friend or co-worker who is selling games off the hook and not strictly enforcing the rules.

I will not be doing the Anaheim auction again. Next stop, Super Auctions!

Well said Rare.... I understand that Capt. Chris has a retail shop, and that's cool. Like any retail outfit, you're in the biz to make money. But masking your inventory in an auction format is the wrong approach. If you really want a certain price for it, put a reserve on it that way there's no bs-ing around. You don't wanna let that Crackin' DJ or Crazy Taxi go for less than $###, then just save everyone the time and put a reserve on it. No harm, no foul.

I'm glad I didn't make it, it did sound like a lot of the same stuff (which is what I was afraid of). I'd like to see Capt. Chris make a dent in the auction biz against SA, but with all due respect, getting into the auction business, especially with arcade games is "too little, too late". The true window of crazy sales (i think) has been going on since the mid to late 90s. I hope I'm wrong in Chris' case... if he can find the niche and make a good business out it, great. But I hope he doesn't forget the collector community is a tight one.... both in awareness, and money. I think its safe to say we know when things aren't what they seem.

Nuff said.... I hope that SA can at least score some interesting stuff for the Aug auction.

A few pics from the auction...

Now I found this one fascinating and almost though it worth sticking around and bidding until the pin incident.

I saw the same type of game at a mall in Japan earlier this year. It was a cross between trading card collecting and interactive gaming. You bought cards, swiped them in the reader then the kids beat the hell out of the controls as the creatures battled. It was cool enough to snap a picture of the mini game row.

I really need to try to make it down to one of those auctions. It sounds like Hydro Thunder is the only title selling really cheap, and that is number 1 on my list. Well, number 1 and 2 since I want a dual.

I get the distinct impression that the guys doing the buyback are in fact not paying the listing/sale commission. I overheard a conversation at the last auction that "since it did not really sell, no need to pay the commission or taxes. We'll work it out later."

Sounds like a buyback was done (happens regularly, even at SA). If they're not charging a seller for commission or taxes for a buyback, then that's cool at least for the seller. It sounds (if that's the correct context of the quote) that they're trying to be cool with the sellers. From a business standpoint, that's making a smart concession.

The problem is that out of the entire auction, sounds like buybacks are the majority which defeats the f'n purpose of an auction folks. Put a damn reserve on it....

Chris...if you're lurking out there, you might wanna chime in and lay things straight, especially if you would like more KLOV members to attend and help the Anaheim auctions flourish.

put a reserve on it that way there's no bs-ing around

As a buyer, I completely agree. However, that's not in the best interest of the sellers. I'd walk if I saw $1500 reserve on a marginal pin vs. the chance to snap one up on the cheap.

Who knows, maybe Chris will score better games to auction in the future. I'm not holding my breath.

Yea, it would certainly encourage more folks to bring games out if they knew they had no risk of selling them cheap without a reserve or being penalized with selling and buy back fees. However, it really does screw up the process. Without risk to the seller, there's no reward for the buyer and no sense of a free market at play. Yea, it's a business. I will just shop elsewhere.

Maybe I'm wrong here but this is the ONLY auction I have every consistently got the felling that I was not going to walk away with a deal and that it was more likely the seller would be buying his own games back, cheaper than I could. I can not recall EVER seeing the same group of games sold at auction then appear at the next 2 or even 3 auctions at the same location!

Spokane is only 8 hours roundtrip. Karl must have just added in the 4 hours of arcade play time to his drivetime:);)
