An Ethical Dilemma

well, since you brought up laws, you state must be really lax with its laws or you as a landlord should know better. There are many situations in CA where even if the property is vacated(even with an eviction), the landlord has a duty to store the contents for 30 days and sell it if its of significant value. take a look at tenants rights in your area. You should know this as a landlord. In CA they have classes, go take some. At the very least, go buy landlord rights and tenants rights books from nolo press. And while your at it, make sure your using legal contracts. the landlord rights book has forms in it, but you might need specialty forms for your area. In CA you want to join tri county CAA. Your area might have a similar service. You would be amazed on how easily you can get sued. It can be as easy as how you answer the phone or how you show the property.

So if this is a rental situation, most likely the landlord is a moron. Unless he got it in writing to toss all of it, he would be liable.

obviously, you should do the right thing and get permission to take them. try mailing a letter to the property. go to county records and look up the address. Ask the neighbors. A real estate agent might be able to help you find out who owns it.

He lives in Iowa, you live in California. Big difference. Perhaps the laws are not so tenant oriented like they are in CA?

When you do, gimme back my DK CP. You've had it for way long and I need it back.

Sorry I had to sell it because my renter's didn't pay rent. I will gladly let you have your pick of the litter of kittens some stray cat had in the cab, to make up for it.

I agree. I know people will not like that I agree. But we all have had a moment where we can choose - take or leave. It's up to you

Bah.. thats a canadian answer.

try going into someones yard uninvited in America.

I'm originally from chicago - I know about backyards ;)

Chicago? yah.. you should know better.

Canada is easy.. if you see someone roaming around your yard you just offer them a beer and ask which hockey team they pull for.

1. if you were not thinking of just going and taking them then why would it be any kind of "ethical dilemma"?

2. you did ask for advice so in this case I would say how about minding your own f*cking business about what a neighbor has in their yard?

Wow. Not sure where the hostility is coming from here, but maybe it would help to read what I posted instead of what you think I meant. I didn't ask for advice (if I did, I would have asked what I should do). I asked what would you do. I was posing it as a dilemma seeing as how I found it an interesting situation given the circumstances and thought others would too. It was presented as a discussion topic.

Thats not exactly clear from your original post. I think most replies are assuming you are asking what you should do.

You didnt post a hypothetical situation you said "although I don't know when the last tenants moved out. I wasn't able to track down the owners (still trying but the city was no help)."

You are doing CSI style research into the tenants and owners with the city but have no interest for yourself just curious what others would do? OK then.

Anyways I dont care.. go hypothetically take them or dont.

I live in my house and I wouldn't care if you came over and took the 2 games in my backyard. In fact I'd be quite pleased. Free clean-up and haul away? Heck yea, anytime!

I can be there in 1.5 hours. Make sure the games in the yard are restored.

Ok, lets figure out where this was taken. We can see it is from Google Street View. It is in a city ending in "k" in Michigan. The Street View data is from Sep 2016. Between those two pieces of information we have a shot at figuring out where it is. Since it was a friend of the OP, it may be in proximity to Trenton, Michigan. That is certainly the first area to check the street view image dates.

Here are the possible cities/towns in MI according to WikiPedia and my rusty regex skills...
