An Ethical Dilemma

Place looks abandoned to me ... uh .... wah ... wait a minute ... oh, nevermind. :001_sconfused:

In the county where i live you can simply go online and search the parcel information through the assessors office and get sales and owner information for free. id imagine a lot of towns are like this, i live in the boonies so if we can do that here its likely it can be done, the owner would be likely grateful to have you remove the " trash" for them as a courtesy free of charge :)

I would post on a public forum about robbing someone else property and ask everyones opinion on it.

Thats the smart move.

Like I said, I'm not taking it without permission. The posting was just to see how other view this situation.

Now sure how it is in your county but here the county sheriff handles all foreclosed and abandoned properties. I would call and explain the situation to them and ask.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost,_mislaid,_and_abandoned_property

"Many exceptions may be applied at common law to the rule that the first finder of lost property has a superior claim of right over any other person except the previous owner. For example, a trespasser's claim to lost property which he finds while trespassing is generally inferior to the claim of the respective landowner. As a corollary to this exception, a landowner has superior claim over a find made within the non-public areas of his property, so if a customer finds lost property in the public area of a store, the customer has superior claim to the lost property over that of the store-owner, but if the customer finds the lost property in the non-public area of that store, such as an area marked "Employees Only," the store-owner will have superior claim, as the customer was trespassing when he found it.[5]"

First bust down the fence and set it on fire creating a diversion. Once the fire dept arrives simply wheel them away in the commotion. Ask one them to help you too. Leave some notes send some letters and forget about them, if they are meant to be yours it will work out.

1. if you were not thinking of just going and taking them then why would it be any kind of "ethical dilemma"?

2. you did ask for advice so in this case I would say how about minding your own f*cking business about what a neighbor has in their yard?

Speaking As a guy who owns lots of rental properties I can assure of 2 things, especially since you said the company that owns the house is out of state.

1 the owner(s) of the house don't care if you take the games. Any crap you take is money saved on their end in clean up costs. They'll be thrilled you didn't steal the copper water lines, furnace, cabinets etc

2. This one is most important. Don't assume based on looks that the house Is vacant. There's a large (way bigger than the average American could imagine) section of the human race that are absolute pigs. I've bought many many repo's and evicted enough people where the houses were so disgusting I wouldn't let a dog stay there, let alone think humans would live there.

So I'd say take them if you are certain no one lives there.

How about renting the place for a month? When you pack up and leave the following month, take the games with you. ;)

this is good advice if your goal is to be shot or stabbed by a meth-addicted transient in a seemingly-abandoned, dilapidated house

as a proud meth addict-American, i must publicly rebuke you and remind you that you do not speak for all of us

some of us shoplift and sell ourselves behind the dumpster at the Pic N' Save to fuel our habits ... AND preserve arcade games as well

IF there were meth addicts squatting at the house those games would already be disassembled lol

well, since you brought up laws, you state must be really lax with its laws or you as a landlord should know better. There are many situations in CA where even if the property is vacated(even with an eviction), the landlord has a duty to store the contents for 30 days and sell it if its of significant value. take a look at tenants rights in your area. You should know this as a landlord. In CA they have classes, go take some. At the very least, go buy landlord rights and tenants rights books from nolo press. And while your at it, make sure your using legal contracts. the landlord rights book has forms in it, but you might need specialty forms for your area. In CA you want to join tri county CAA. Your area might have a similar service. You would be amazed on how easily you can get sued. It can be as easy as how you answer the phone or how you show the property.

So if this is a rental situation, most likely the landlord is a moron. Unless he got it in writing to toss all of it, he would be liable.

obviously, you should do the right thing and get permission to take them. try mailing a letter to the property. go to county records and look up the address. Ask the neighbors. A real estate agent might be able to help you find out who owns it.
