So I got this in Februrary. It was pretty much dead. It looked great inside, but I could only get a small garbled picture. So I ordered some of Bob Roberts shotgun kits that pertained to my Asteroids, and threw them in. It was still the same, so I found a KLOV'er- mrbill08 who fixed Asteroids boards. In the meantime I fixed a missing corner, fixed the kick panel flaking, and cleaned it all up. So flashforward to today. I got the board in the mail, and installed the Braze HS kit I got a few weeks ago. Turned it on, and it fired right up. It works great, and I'm loving it- it's my first vector.

After everything is all said and done, I still have under $300 in it. Which isn't bad at all. And it should be ok for quite a while, especially after capping the AR, the monitor, and replacing the big blue.

Here's the progress of the project in a photo set here, for all you restoration nuts.

As I got it.

Anyway this is just a distillation of the whole process, there are about 80 photos of the whole process in the photo set I linked above. Thanks a lot to:

Mrbill08 for getting me a woking board for a great price.
Dokert for showing me how to test my AR before I plugged my board in.
And a local KLOV'er Smoke for selling me the cab at the price he paid at an auction.

Wahhahaha! "ITz AlIvE!!"

Nice job on getting it back in shape. :)

Edit: I'll just emit that I was one of the one's who looked at the link.

Nice to see one saved. The sad part is that a lot of people on here would have considered it too far gone and trashed it. There is no better feeling in this hobby than putting the final touches on the restoration of a machine that most likely would have been a goner in anyone else's hands.

Great game and the right choice to put it back together! :)

I have to say that Asteroids is a grail for me so I was extremely pleased to get one this week.

Mine needs some cosmetics but is functional as of now.

Looks great in my lil row;)

I agree. It looks nice all lit up.

There were too many good things that the machine had, to trash it. Cosmetically it isn't perfect, but I got all the stuff fixed and I didn't break the bank. I'm really happy.

And thanks to all the others for the kind words. It's good to get a machine going again. Especially one that's 30 years old. I wonder how long it had been sitting dead...

I've been playing it off and on all evening. I love the Braze kit for starters, and I also love the glow of the bullets as they cross the screen. Something you can't replicate. I also enjoy the coolness factor of it being in black and white too. It really brings me back.

Congratulations and great job. Asteroids is a must have for any gameroom, and I'm glad to see you took the time to fix one instead of trashing one. I rescued one that was in a barn for nine years, and it was very satisfying to see it fire up for the first time especially since it was the first monitor I completely rebuilt myself.

Looks great. It's so gratifying to see all of your efforts come together with good results.
