Saw this thread in another forum and felt it worthy of posting here. Basically, Amazon.com allows you to send anyone money using your cell phone or web for no fees unless you are paying them with a credit card. So you get to keep more of your money than if you used paypal. Apparently this service has been in existence for about 6 months now but this is the first I have heard of it. Here is a link to their site:

I have no financial association with them other than setting up a personal account. Thoughts?

Sounds interesting, but unless Ebay accepts it I don't see it taking off.

Is eBay even a major player any more? I used to use eBay all of the time...now I can't remember the last time I used them. Reading post from here and other forums I get the impression many don't use them any more either. eBay can't be as big now as they once were when they purchased Pay Pal.

It's the 25th most visited website.

Ebay is a huge player. Easily the biggest player for regular people to sell their stuff.

I don't know for sure (and with the whole Skype debacle, they may well be poorer), but my suspicion is that they are bigger, at least in terms of transaction volume. In recent years they've become increasingly friendly to larger volume sellers, somewhat at the expense of you and me. This means they may have fewer users, but more of those users are doing many, many transactions per month, and they are pretty much all using PayPal.

It's pretty much correct to say that if you can't be used as a payment method on EBay, you're going to have trouble getting any traction. Not to say it can't be done, just that if you CAN get on EBay, then you've got a LOT more volume available to you.

Amazon is one of the few who could possibly put forth a credible competitor to PayPal. They already have the infrastructure in place, and they can probably promote it through some of their other ventures.

Oh yea, and lots of people already have an account with Amazon, which (along with their high name recognition) gives them a lot of potential traction with users - it's clear that they aren't some fly-by-night scammer.
