Amazing Game Collection - But sad at the same time!

Found this on Youtube, guy died and left this massive what I would call a horde of games for his wife to deal with. I think I need to rethink what I have and what should happen to all of it should I die.

It just goes on and on. This guy was obviously a horder!

Just try to avoid dying. That should prevent that from happening.

Everything seems to go on forever when it's on a shaky video on YouTube...

It's really not all that much stuff - one room, organized on shelves. Sure, it's not perfectly organized, but you can tell the guy did a good job keeping things together, bagging up games with the manuals, etc. A "hoarder" tends to just toss everything in piles. This was a collection. Thought went into it. There's some pretty rare/nice stuff there too. It's not junk.

That said... the nerve of that guy - just up and dying without selling that stuff first.

I think what disturbed me is that it isn't far from what I have. To us it is an awesome collection, but to everyone else it is a room full of shelves of old shit.

If the guy wasn't dead I would have said awesome collection! But knowing he is dead and his wife has to deal with it puts a completely different perspective on it!

Are you sure it was just 1 room? I think it was several.

Theres a fine line between hoarding and collecting but I dont think this guy crossed that line. This looks like a collection to me as well. There is a place for all of that stuff though, eBay!

I often wonder what our wives/kids would do with the collections that some of us have if we were to kick. I think some of them tolerate the crap in the house just to keep us happy but there are a few wives here that loves the games almost as much as the collector does.

I wonder where this lady is? Some one should offer to buy that collection.

My wife tolerates my collection, but I really need to think about what I have, the arcade machines are easy to get rid of 13 cabinets, but shelves of games is what I need to figure out. I think I might just will them to my friend Spoonmanx :)

Seriously... eBay...

I am SO happy that I dont have the "keep" gene inside of me. I'd go nuts knowing that I had all of that stuff THAT I"M NEVER GOING TO TOUCH in my house.

When you have multiples of the same item you're no longer collecting, you're hoarding.

Not always true. I have 3 copies of FFVII, but only because I got the last 2 for stupid cheap ($5/per). Other than that I only have ~50 PS1 games, and those are just the ones I bought when I had the system. Am I a hoarder? Hell, I wouldn't even say I'm a collector. I just didn't get rid of the games that I could play on the PS1's replacement (PS2, and later the PS3).

I've got a stack of XBOX1 games that I'm GIVING away today. I've lived in this house for almost 3 years and neither of the XBOX1's that I had were plugged in.

I just dont see the point in keeping anything that I have not touched in years.

Collecting/hoarding... Ugh...

Don't you see that they are different versions of the same thing?

I am in the same boat, I am also a long-time console collector. But Tighe (EDIT: Spoonmax), you need some rules to slim that down.

Let me see if I can help...
1. The easiest thing to get rid of will be the video game mags and strategy guides. A lot of the classic 1980 mags have been converted to PDFs. The strategy guides are the easiest to get rid of, all of that is online on Gamefaqs. Old paper starts to smell, you know. That frees up a lot of space.
2. Slim down the action figure collection. Keep Mai, but I think the Metal Gear guys can go.
3. If I only have 40 games for a particular system, I only have one.
4. If I have over 40 games, I buy a second console, just in case the first breaks. Get rid of anything extra. Really, you don't need three X-Boxes.
5. I would also get rid of the plushes. They will degrade, collect dust, and no child is going to want that. They have been produced in such quantity, they will be worthless in time. Give them to the local Ronald McDonald house or children's hospital.
6. Consider getting your money out of your Neo Geo AES stuff. A lot of that is available on compilations nowadays, which is only going to hurt the value of the originals, IMHO.

You have a very nice collection though, try these suggestions, but don't get rid of the bulk of it. It is something to be proud of!

So am I a hoarder since I have multiples of all of my Alf things? It is all organized in its same room, but I wouldn't say that i'm a hoarder because I don't have useless junk/trash all over the room. I don't think people understand the difference between a "COLLECTION" and a "Hoarder".

...

I have thought of this "dying" thing also, luckily ive come to the conclusion that none of this will exist once I die. So problem solved.

Spoonmanx's collection is awesome, and all of his magazines are in acid free bags. I can't fault his at all. It is like a museum. Mine is a haphazzard mess in comparison:

I couldn't watch the whole video since my connection got crappy but I didn't really think hoarder, just extreme collector.

I just dont see the point in keeping anything that I have not touched in years.

I'm with you. I used to collect consoles and handheld games but got rid of all of them years ago due to that very thing... after you have the stuff sitting on your shelves or in boxes or in the basement for years without touching it it's hard to justify keeping it(unless you have that hoarding gene ;)).

I also get this way with the arcade stuff... I'm emptying out the shed soon here because it's just stuff I "kinda" worked on and it was just taking up space now. I'll clear it out... probably get something else to "work" on... then clear it out in 6 months or so.

And Tighe's right... these arcade games should be pretty simple to get rid of. You know there are loads of guys here who would step up and help clear them out without screwing over the widow.

/jeff stops typing this message and emails his wifey to post a big forsale post here when he dies...

I think the real question is: are you able to part with your possessions, and if so at what price?

I think I am on the verge of slimming down my consoles, it is just so hard. I never sold a game I bought ever until a year and a half ago, and that was to finance parts for my arcade machines. I have all the old Nintendo Power and EGM magazines, and I NEVER look at them.

I need to make a "video game will" for my wife, I don't care about money, I just want them gone when I kick the bucket.

Original 25" bad dudes cabinet? I have a hard time believing that. Do you have pix of the entire cabinet?

Jon

Tig, I'm actually kind of surprised that you think the guy in the first video (who passed away and left it to his wife to sort out) was a hoarder instead of a collector. IMO, as it has already been stated, this guy had neat stacks of everything organized by system onto shelves, original boxes, stuff in plastic sleeves, etc. That means he wanted to take care of his stuff. A hoarder basically just gets stuff, throws it in a room, gets more, throws it somewhere to get it out of the way, and continues the process until they're essentially walking all over a pile of stuff (Ever see the "hoarders" TV show on TLC?).

My wife knows my hobby. She knows I have a lot of this stuff...systems, games, collectibles, memorabilia, etc. I've already given her general instructions of what to do if something ever happens to me. If she did it right, and sold some or all of it for what it's worth, she could pay a lot of bills and live pretty decently for a while.

I SHOULD put it everything into detail and organize it better, and maybe give her more explicit instruction for some of the more rare items, but I don't look at it as leaving her a big mess (not to say I couldn't organize storage areas better), but a legacy that will be worth more as time goes by. She's smart and she knows what she's doing; I'm not worried.
