am I the only one.....

I was sitting here thinking that I'm not really good at video games and was wondering if I'm the only collector who isn't? Don't get me wrong, I can do well but I'm no record breaker. I can kick a lot of people's asses but to be honest I'm just okay at it. I just keep seeing so many people talking about all the amazing scores they get and I've never really been able to do that.

The game I'm best at, I hate. Space Invaders. One of the most boring games ever. But I'm pretty decent at it. Well over 50,000 back in the arcade days.

But in general, I'm not so good either. Once in a great while, I can get into the zone on a game, but pretty rare. I get beat at my own games by people that only play them when they come to my house.

I'm all over the place. Ms pac turbo is by far my best game, and I have studied quite a bit of aarts play. I eat every ghost every time and am working on a killscreen. I get burned out quickly though, and maybe play a game every couple weeks since they can take over 2 hours. I'm pretty good at centipede, and can get around 350k. Most of my other games I'm terrible at though. A great game for me on robotron is around 500k and I'm happy to put up 100k on galaga. Missile command makes me look like an amateur, and I'm lucky to break 30k.

I guess I got pretty decent at Commando because I was always setting the high score in the arcades but I didn't remember what that was. I played enough marathon pterodactyl hunting games of Joust that I was able to use all the free men to home my skills so I can get between 200K-600K without killing any pterodactyls regularly now. DK. Jr somewhere around 300K, and I used to get somewhere north of 400K on Pacman. Time Pilot I can usually get 300K-400K but I only get to play it at CAX. The games I own, I'm not good at no matter how much I try.

I'm pretty pro-tier in some 90s games. The classics? Lucky to break 150k on any of them, to break 200k has been my ongoing goal on most of them for several years. Doubt I'll ever hit that.

If there's a game you just ROCK at, I can totally see going for the record circuit, but other than that I shoot at beating my own score and impressing the, uh, normal folk that come in and go "OH WOW THERE'S MORE THAN 10 LEVELS IN DIG DUG?" They're really meant to be played to be enjoyed, not to beat everyone in the world.

I'm pretty good at Street Fighter and Mario Kart; all the others I just have fun and get my carcass plowed... but still a good time.

I'm pretty much pathetic when it comes to scoring... Most games I'm lucky to make it through the first few levels. Kind of intimidating when KLOVers are getting together... I don't want anyone to see how slow my reflexes are, or my basic lack of understanding of most gameplay. I do enjoy the challenge of beating my own high scores, though.

it depends.... at games i am i am decent at. i can't generally get past 150-200k in pacman, and 175k is my max in mario bros. but i guess it just depends on how much i play. the more i play the better my scores, the less i play the worse they get. so typically i'll play one particular game per day or 3 and just play for an hour or two.

Im OK at my games. I can get 100K+ on DK, I can get 1M+ on ZooKeeper, I'm around 200K on Food Fight, almost to 100K on Centipede, I was at about 500K on Robotron, I can finish the first course on Super Hang On, etc. I'm pretty good at Paperboy (have a higher score than the TG record), and NBA Jam.

If you call that "OK" then I'm THE WORST EVAR. I can barely clear the first board on DK, I can only get to the 3rd maze on Ms. Pac/Pac and I can get 3000 on Berzerk if I'm really focused.

I love to play video games, but I was never really that good at any of them.

I'm not very good at the DK games, but I can do okay on DK3. Dig Dug, Centipede and Millipede, I'm 'fair' at. I'm better at scrolling shooters than the rest and I can get over 300K on R-Type if I really concentrate.

I guess now that I'm building my own arcade I'll play my certain games a lot more and will get better. I know my Rush 2049 score kills any of the others on my machine but I've seen others that I don't think I could possibly touch.

i love video games. playing, working on them.. but i suck ass at 99% of them. There are exceptions but yeah, dont feel bad, youre not alone.

I'm not real good at any of my games...but then, I don't really play them alot. To me, they are like art. I get alot of joy just looking at them sitting there, knowing they work. I replace the Marquee lights with 4 watt LED strips and wired them to be always on...that adds to the cool artiness of them.

Fun is the priority. Some people find their enjoyment improved by head to head competing or trying to analyze/break the game. Some people don't. Some people find collecting/maintenance more enjoyable than playing the games themselves. As long as you're getting enjoyment out of the hobby, you shouldn't worry about it.

It's funny you should say that, I love to collect and work on the games. I do play them but I find myself tinkering with them more. I just picked up 3 working games last week, in that time I've played them a couple times but have spent far more time working on them. I've been tweaking on the monitors to get them perfect, fixing buttons and joysticks that don't work perfect and cleaning. Also, the prior owner of these games was def and the sound on two of them were full on blasting! :D I'm checking the knobs next time before I fire a game up and get the attention of my neighbor....

I have learned a lesson after owning 75 games- Beer does not make you any better at them.

That said, yes, I still suck at most of my games, and i probably wont get any better since beer is my second love. Once a year I might have a good run on magician lord that I yap about for weeks.

I've always been told that when it comes to games, you'll be really, really bad while you're drunk -- and then the morning after, you'll suddenly be better than you ever were.

Sounds like a fun experiment :)

Wait.

You mean the games keep track of how many points you make?

Seriously???
