am I the only one.....

Also, I think there is perhaps a misconception that all competitive players play/practice constantly.

Now you're just being mean ;)

Im OK at my games. I can get 100K+ on DK, I can get 1M+ on ZooKeeper, I'm around 200K on Food Fight, almost to 100K on Centipede, I was at about 500K on Robotron, I can finish the first course on Super Hang On, etc. I'm pretty good at Paperboy (have a higher score than the TG record), and NBA Jam.

I don't get to spend nearly the time I want playing them, but there is a competitive spirit in me that wants to be really good at them.

On most games, I'm fair to average. There are very few where I'm a good player, Ms Pac and Galaga are my best. I've hit over 400K on Ms Pac (turbo) and my personal best Galaga was a bit over 1mil. My current Galaga machine has high score save on it and the best on it right now is somewhere near 550K, so I'm rusty there.

As already said though, I play for fun and it is always cool when you're playing with friends and go back and forth. Last time I had my family over, my brother-in-law and I went back and forth setting the high score on the Tempest machine. I'd put one on, he'd beat it, I'd come back and beat that, etc...that was fun.

I suck at pinball, but that's fun to play. I'm enjoying my TSPP and Revenge From Mars.

I can only compete with myself or I lose interest. I hit 117,000 on Robotron the other day and almost shat myself. That was a full 16,000 points higher than I had ever scored in the 20-30 times that I have ever played the game. A few months ago, I was on a mission to keep beating my own HS on Popeye. I reached a high of 43,000 and just hit a wall. No amount of playing the game would take me any further, so I just quit playing it for a while. When I start back up, I won't rest until I hit 50 Gs. If I tried competing with world records I would get too frustrated and pissed off. I don't like feeling overwhelmed.

While I can kick visitors asses on pretty much all of my games, I am still quite terrible.

I cracked 100K on Satan's Hollow the other night for like maybe the 3rd time in the couple years I've had it.

I can get 159K on Tron, 35K on DOT, 126K on Mad Planets, 8K or so on Sea Wolf, 80K on Sinistar, 20K on Berzerk, and I think my high on Robotron is like 240K.

I like going around and setting the high score on everyones Tron's...So far I've done it on these KLOVer's machines: Auric, Jeffsgames, SilverCoin, SeaWolf and TheMonarch4...even better if they still have the battery in it that saves the high scores :D

yup having your own goals is often enough, they don't need to be the twin galaxies' world record, or the klov most bragged about...

i have yet to break 1M on Robotron... had it for over a decade, 992k was my best years ago, and when i had a roommate that was good competition (he was also in the high 900s), only 660k recently... its still my favorite but...

new additions are usually where i track my score the most, a way to monitor progress... i never really played DK Jr, but when i got that i could see clear progress... beat the first level, woot!, 10k, 15k, 25k, made it up to 38k before the monitor went out (and i still need to fix)

same with 720, i'm happy with my 84k now, but a few weeks ago i was striving to break 50k

none of these are anywhere close to what some people can get, but they are great for what I can get, or my machines get to see :)

Set your own goals.

It doesn't make sense to compare yourself to guys that shoot for records who've spent years playing their game and honing their skills with the intent of breaking world records.

I've played DK on and off for almost 3 years now and I still have yet to break 300K. But that's my goal for now. :)

That's better than pretty good on Easy St, that's outstanding...how close are you to Vic's Easy St. score?

I honestly play for fun, which is why I hop around to different games so often. If something happens scorewise that's cool but I always from my youth up played to see how far I could get from a screen/level perspective. Always wanted to see how fast something could get :)

About 12K. Im still trying out different strategies. I'd love to get 160K.

Vic's working at Philly Barcade now and they have a Paperboy as well. If you are ever in the area, give me a shout and we can all deliver papers intoxicated.

That sounds like heaven.

There are some games I am very good at then there are others that I don't know how people get the scores they do, like the million plus scores on Galaga, or just making past parsec 10 in Gaplus. Although I realized that the flashing stars will let you know where the next wave of ships is coming from, and my score went up alot.

I have been playing DK for 30 years. I made it to 250k when I was 12, and didn't better that score until I was probably 37. My best is 287,500, but I haven't even had a 200k game in over a year. I learned something when I got my high score: It took 45 minutes, and I don't really have a strong desire to play the game longer than that.

I am starting to play DK once in a while again, but I am terrible at it now. I think the High Score since I got the save kit last year is 138k. I take a lot of risks, and make a lot of mistakes. I am just not as good as I used to be.

I jumped all 27 busses on Stunt Cycle last week. I think that was more fun than any other score I have ever got. I am up to 95k on Tempest, and just can't seem to beat it.

Hopefully someday someone will show up who is just a little better than me at these games. That will motivate to improve more than anything else. Personal competition is fun.

I collect and I play for fun. I mostly just try to top my personal best on each game I play and that's about it. When I go to an actual arcade, I get a little more competitive because it's more of a social situation, and places like Galloping Ghost and Star Worlds arcade nurture that competitive spirit in the name of fun.
