I was sitting here thinking that I'm not really good at video games and was wondering if I'm the only collector who isn't? Don't get me wrong, I can do well but I'm no record breaker. I can kick a lot of people's asses but to be honest I'm just okay at it. I just keep seeing so many people talking about all the amazing scores they get and I've never really been able to do that. I guess now that I'm building my own arcade I'll play my certain games a lot more and will get better. I know my Rush 2049 score kills any of the others on my machine but I've seen others that I don't think I could possibly touch.

I suck at video games. I really do. Ms Pac Man is probably my best game, and even that is a challenge to get more than 130K on the speed up version.

Donkey Kong? *snort* ....like 20K.

Now FIXING video games, on the other hand.....I'm getting pretty good at that now. Especially monitors.

No. Just when I think I am good at a game, I look at the records and realize how much I suck!

Personally, I think playing a game for a record is stupid. You almost seem to lose the fun of the game when all you care about is being the best at a game. I would much rather play with friends to see who gets the highest score or try to beat my own.
Remember, records are made to be broken. There is a lot of truth in that.

I am probably the best at Castlevania or Satan's Hollow... and even those, I suck at compared to many others!

I'm not very good at them either, but I still keep playing because it's fun to me to try and beat my own high score. I don't think I'll ever get good enough at any off these to get close to a record.

Heh, I was watching a guy (world class gamer with many records) play Satan's Hollow recently...amazing...he got over 14 million. Even after watching almost the whole game (I was helping him keep track of the rollovers, since it rolls back to 0 at 1 million), I still can only manage about 120K.

Naaah I suck at my games. But then again most of the people who can rock high scores play those games excessively, study patterns, study other players, and are a bit obsessive.

Besides when it comes right down to it, being good at video games isn't going to get you anywhere in life (or anywhere with women for that matter). "Digital athletes"? Pfft please...

I only play games to have fun; not to see how high of a score I can get.

But if I was competing in something like Starcade or was in some kind of competition where I could win big money and big prizes, then I would try to work on getting high scores! :)

I'm no record breaker either.

I'm still interested in all my games and pins but for example I've not played them in weeks. I've not due to a huge family issue and the fact that I'm building my own right now and consumed with it.

I like working on them, the technical aspect but I do know my restorations will blow away most. My games look new, so I guess I win there compared to beating a high score or two. Look new but I want people to pay them, they are not museum pieces not to be touched.

Compared to a lot of the people on here, I suck at most games. But that is not why I play them. I am better then my buddies, and that is all that counts!
:D

i'm not great at most of my games either. 50k on DK, 25k on Asteroids Deluxe, 40k on Bosconian... those are good days for me. i suppose if i played more i'd get better but life often gets in the way.

i did do my best game EVAR!!! on Gyruss a few weeks ago and felt pretty awesome getting close to 200k. i know that's not much compared to a lot of the great players but i'm not going to let that get me down.

Don't feel bad. I'm atrocious at most games.

I just don't have it in me to obsess over high scores. Takes the fun out of it, for me.

I do this to relieve stress. Not to acquire more of it.

I suck at most of my favorite games. Sf2 is one of my favorites and the truth is that I've never been able to be the arcade version of the game. Ms pac is the other and i my best score is like 80k. They are fun to play though.

I suck at all my games. I have owned Asteroids for 10 years now and my high score is 45K. Joust I have gotten up to a bit over 200K, IIRC. Ms Pac fast I saw 201K *once*. My usual is closer to 150K. Donkey Kong is maybe 40K on a good day. I don't even keep track of Star Wars, Spy Hunter, Tron, Pac or anything played on the MAME cab.

I did look up my Marble Madness high score once and it put me at #10 on TG, but I never submitted a claim. It's not that big a deal to me, but I do post about it every chance I get. :)

I read somewhere that the classic era games were designed to give the average player 2-3 minutes of game time before killing him, so it you can beat that, you are better than average!

.

I'm good at pac man and galaga, but just because I can beat anyone's score I have met just means I haven't met the right people. 145,000 pac man, and 314,000 Galaga is great for me, but not really all that fantastic.

I suck most at dk jr. I mean really bad, sometimes I don't get past the first stage.

I agree that beating top scores is most fun when it's your friend and you go back and forth a few times.

I'm a survivalist. Score is cool, but I play first and foremost for the 1CC barrier. Still haven't actually pulled it off on anything. So, there you go. I do hold the top solo scores on both sides of TC4 but I'm the only serious player here so I doubt they're actually impressive.

I have some nice times on 2049 though.

Don or Ben?

Also, I think there is perhaps a misconception that all competitive players play/practice constantly.

i mostly suck as well... but that's not the point

i have my own high scores on games, and that gives me a more fun and realistic challenge to try and better than someone i'll never meet's score i'll never beat

and of course there's more to collecting than scores by far

As long as you have fun that's what matters. Play to have fun!

That pretty much sums it up.
Whether you are a casual gamer, hard core, or record breaker.... be what you want as long as it's fun.

My best was like 90k on Satan's Hollow. Other dudes would LAUGH at that. However, I was pretty stoked!
