I see a lot of what's this and that worth. Obviously location, availability, game, price, how bad you want it, all come into play when determining what you shell out. I grew up with Altered Beast and came across a guy about an hour away who needs money pretty bad willing to part with his. No probs with the cab/cp/side art. Marquee has a crack and a button sticks . . no big issue. Is $200 a fair price, $100 per player in your eyes? I could get him down a bit more, but I'm comfortable financially and haggling $50 over a good looking game seems pointless. Obviously we all try to get the best deals.

Thanks!

$200 for any working game, in good shape and it's a title that you want is a good deal. Buy it and feel good about it!

Thanks man. I guess I am just looking for someone to give me the extra push to bring another one into the house. Then again, coming here for advice is not the best way to help an addiction since we are all afflicted. lol

Your brothers here at KLOV are always available to nudge you toward getting more games.

Although, if you had said "Is AB good game? I never played it but I know a guy who has it for $200" I would have said "$200 is too much to pay for a game you don't really want, and a nice AB should sell for $200-ish anyway so it's not a steal."

See, even other junkies can be honest. :)

lol. true. Its being bought.

I would say that there are very few games that are worth $200 unless it is a game you like. It differs with location, but here in Reno, most prices are really low. I bought an Altered Beast a couple of years ago. It was on Craigs list for about 6 months at $150. It finally lowered to $100, and I bought it for $80 since the sound wasn't working. A few months later when I decided to sell it, I think I got my $80 back, so I basically cleaned it and fixed the sound for free. lol

If it was a game I really wanted, I probably would have payed the $150 6 months earlier.

I bought a Neo Geo 4 slot for $200 which at the time was about the most I ever spent on a game. When I got there (a friend's brother was selling it), the game had been gutted. The brother had torn it apart to consolize it and just left it in pieces for a few years. I actually put it all back together in his garage, and still payed the $200 for it. Before that, I would have offered $50 since I would have to put it all back together, but I didn't even haggle on it. That was when I figured out that I don't always need to get a killer deal on every game. Most of the games I have bought in the last year cost more than I thought they were worth, but they were games that I wanted. I have had a lot of games that were great deals, but I never wanted to play them. There have been a few games that I never even played (aside from brief testing) before getting rid of.

This forum is a little light on perspective sometimes, and I definitely had to put things into perspective. That $200 game that we can enjoy for years costs the same as 3 Sushi dinners. Seems like a pretty good bargain from that perspective. Damnit! Now I want sushi. lol

I'm a pretty big cheapskate myself, and I'd pay $200 for a game if it needed only very little- because if I have to sell a game I like to at least break even on parts. So if it's in good shape, and everything works and you don't need to buy artwork or get a board repair or anything- then pounce. If the monitor just needs a cap kit then that's no big deal- they're pretty cheap anyway.

In my opinion, $200 for an Altered Beast is a close call, but it depends on a few things --

--Is the cabinet in nice shape? Clean (or cleanable) with no water damage and bashed in corners.

--Is the monitor in nice shape? Bright with light/moderate screen burn.

--Is it a game anyone else will want, or could be turned into something better? Altered Beast is pretty well known, but not highly sought after, but you could play Golden Axe, ESWAT, Aurail, Shinobi, etc all on the same cab, if you get the boards. Lots of great Sega 16 PCBs out there to play!

Bottom line, if the answers above are all yes, go for it -- worst case scenario is that you get tired of it and can't sell it, you can part it out for about what you have into it.

I built my Altered Beast from a gutted cab for only slightly less than the asking price of this game. Just like other posters have said, there are a lot of great games that plug into this wiring harness. I say get it. Maybe you will get lucky and find it is standard JAMMA and someone just combined an Altered Beast board with a JAMMA adapter.
