HELLO ALL,

i wanted to make this post for All Members to make note of for your eveyday board repairs and things of that nature :)

as some of you know..i'm a retired arcade tech here in florida..some of the things i used to use in the arcade i was a tech at was a Fiberglass Contact Cleaning brush...i used to get mine from WICO years ago..but when i retired i stopped getting them..anyhow since i went into computer repair and salvage i started needing one of those wonderful brushes for cleaning up RAM memory sticks....well to my surprise RADIO shack Sells them :)

so for ALL of you guys who have Never Used ONE...GET ONE..it's WAAAAAAAAAAAAY Better than a Eraser and you don't leave a RUBBER FILM on your Edge Contacts .

NOW i know some of you guys Hate Radio Shack and i understand that Completely...BUT Rad Shack does have a Good Contact Brush... NOW for those of you guys who rather use Erasers...MORE power to ya...just remember to clean off the connectors with alcohol when your done using that eraser :D

for those who would rather do a clean job..Get one of these Contact Brushes.... they tend to remove the oxidation without removing the metal and they make it very clean :)

i've been using these for years and they do a great job..they should be a part of every game repairer's tool box..i use mine to clean computer memory when people bring me there pc's and bitch that the pc is flipping out ;)

ya never know ..it might just Make Your Day having one of these :D

anyhow...this is the link at radio shack and they SHOULD have these In store... my store locally had them so call them and give them the part number :)

and GOOD LUCK ALL !

Thanx For Reading :)

I get a similar brush from MCM. I also keep the brass brushes
although I seldom need them.

The only thing I can say is don't get the bits of bristle that
break off on your skin, they itch and don't want to come out !

If your eraser is leaving a film, you are using the wrong eraser. Use a plastic eraser not a rubber one. I recommend to the eraser guys to use a staedler mars plastic eraser. Never use alcohol to clean contacts unless they are bleeding. Use a contact cleaner like DeoxitD5, it also enhances the connection and lubes slots at the same time.

hmm i might just have to grab one of these and find another use for all these pencils...

I wanted on for years and never got around to getting one. If i would have known rat shack carried them i woulda had one by now.

YOU CAN use Alcohol but you have to let it airdry at least a hour... but Yes Contact Cleaner should be used if Available... alcohol if you can't get contact cleaner... and if ya use alcohol..it's prefered you use it on a rag or cotton swab and use it lightly.

DENATURED alcohol Prefered.

I learned of these fiberglass brushes recently. They are absolutely wonderful!

I got mine from TwistyWristAracde.com (Riptor on this forum). Great to deal with and quick shipping.

The correct alcohol to use would be isopropyl which would evaporate in a matter of seconds and leave absolutely no residue.

I've actually found it quite difficult to get a fibreglass pen, someone recommended using one to clean corroded pins on SMD IC's but I haven't been able to find them for sale anywhere.

Fine grade Scotchbrite works just fine for polishing edgecard fingers. Dremel and wire wheel is fine too. Deoxit and a q-tip, etc. There's several ways to get the job done.

And whats all this paranoia about alcohol? You don't need to leave it sit for an hour. If its denatured/anhydrous, it evaporates very quickly. I deflux boards with it after repairs and it only takes a few mins for a completely soaked board to dry off just by sitting it outdoors.

I agree, we use IPA (isopropyl alcohol) all the time on silicon wafers to remove the film left by Acetone to clean wafers of any solvent base product and it dries fairly quick and leaves them rally 'clean'.
