Aliens Restoration Underway...WHY?!

Ok, I am trying to remove the Joystick from my CP. The problem is that the "knob" is too big to fit through the hole (That's what she said). So I am now trying to take apart the joystick, but can't get the actual stick to come out. It does look a bit rusty. Tried WD40 to help, but no luck.
The "knob" does not screw off. Any suggestions???

Says it is a WICO Corp. It is on my Aliens CP.

I am trying to replace the Plexi on the CP since mine is cracked.

I don't know about these particular sticks, but on most you don't have to remove the ball or tear drop portion of the stick. Typically the ball and shaft should come out towards the "outside" portion of the CP (not the direction that would require putting the ball through the hole on the CP).

It looks like you've removed the c-clamp that is typically at the bottom of the shaft. You try just pulling up?

you return to center gromet is rusted down to the shaft. I've seen that before. I actually had to cut through the gromet and sacrifice the thing in order to get the shaft out safely.

It definitely should. Sometimes they get rusted on pretty tight though. I've had to do the same thing Prairied mentioned before.

Besides lubing it up with KY or AsstroGlyde, what should I use to get rid of this rust?
PB Blaster?

I'm of the opinion the rusted parts are shot. I'd research what can be replaced with available NOS stuff if not replace the sticks all together. I dunno if others would agree though.

Edit: You're talking about just the rust on the sticks right?

im with him, replace those... get new ones!!

Nooooo! Get two vice grips. Put some penetrating oil, or rubbing alcohol, and drip it onto the spot where the stick meets the grommet. Let it sit for a while. Oil it up again and tighten the vice grips on the joystick shaft and the square metal piece around the grommet. Now twist.

When you get it off, sand it nice and smooth to get any rust off. I don't oil these because I have a feeling it will end up drying out and freezing them together again.

You need to use a little grease so it doesn't seize again.
If the parts are too gone, then you can get a new ball/shaft and grommet from a Wico microswitch stick (those parts are the same as the leaf-switch stick).

Ah, I would hate to have to replace them, after all, they work really well. I just want to put on new Plexi and clean off the CP art. I will have to take time to work on that rust and loosen it up.
Thanks for all the great suggestions!

With nice weather here in MN, I had a few hours to spend on the sides of the cab.
This is a Defender cab that was converted to a Fast Draw and then to a JAMMA Aliens w/ wood vinyl. I stripped down the Fast Draw using Quick Strip (which wasn't quick at all) and spent some time sanding it for a smooth surface. I then added the black vinyl that I got from chris25810.
After I added the side art. The main ALIEN art was crappy NOS and there are some bubbles that just won't go away. Unfortunately that was the way I got it. I may go back later on and buy some reproduction ones because these are a bit ghetto. The Aliens logo is great though!

Found these two and figured I would add them to the top of the cab. They look kinda cool. I know I have another one someplace and when I find it, I will put it up there. I might look for a few cheap ones on ebay and put them on time like a "hoard" of them. LOL!

Lucky SOB. That's one of my absolute FAVORITE arcade games, alongside Moonwalker, The Simpsons, TMNT and Final Fight.

Thanks man, I do love it. I also am going to redo the T molding on it. I just have been lazy lately. I am deciding if I want to just do BLACK or go to a dark purple or dark blue. Something "Alieny" LOL!

Depending on how much of a purist you are, you could go really neat with it, and maybe do something like have custom vacu-formed side plastics...on one side, have half an alien egg opening and put a green LED inside, and on the other side, have part of an Alien's head and face, and hands, so that it looks like its emerging from the darkness and coming out of your machine. I always thought that'd be a killer way to do an Aliens cab.
