Al Lasher's Electronics in Berkeley is a hidden gem.

For anyone in Northern California who is needing electronic components for your games. This place is great. They don't specialize in arcade games by any means so I doubt that they will have a flyback for your monitor. But for general electronic components it's an old school style store with lots of shelves of bins to look through and knowledgeable friendly staff.

Highly recommended!

Picked up a project for my son to work on while we were there too. It's a voice-changing kit. If you know of other fun simple projects like this let me know....he loves this stuff!

man, i should've had you send him over my way a couple weeks ago. had a wg6100 he could've rebuilt for me...

Did you see the thread of him rebuilding a wg6100 a while back? He did a great job. It was just the cap-kit though....not a full rebuild.

We used to have a place like that in my hometown. Kass electronics. The salesmen knew what they were doing and were very helpful. Learned alot over the years. Sadly, they are long gone and there is nothing like it around now.

P.S. Good to see youngsters picking up the hobby. Nothing like assembling a kit and having it fire right up.

Yes, it's a shame that Radio Shack decided to become just another crappy cell phone store.

It truly is a shame. The kit didn't come with a speaker so I went to Radio Shack and they informed me that they no longer carry small project speakers. Sad.

Yeah, it worked perfect straight away and he learned all about feedback since we had the speaker wire to short. :) Man, that sucker is loud when you turn it up. It runs off a 9V battery so I wasn't expecting much but holy crap.

I go there a lot when I need a part quick. Only 10 minuets away and it's pretty amazing what they have in stock. Electronic plus in San Rafael has even more in stock but super expensive.

how about a fan to flow some of them fumes away.

It's too late for us, but our kids still have a chance :)

I would love to have a place like that here in Reno. Our little electronics store has been getting steadily worse for years. They are only open Monday - Friday, 9-5 now, which makes it really hard to even get there. They should change their name from Sandy's to "We can order it"; they rarely have what I need in stock. They don't seem to grasp the fact that I can order something from Digikey just as easily as they can.

Good question, I never thought much about it since I grew up always seeing it done with no smoke protection. What's the best practice on something like this?

I have a $3 fan I bought at wal mart and everytime I solder I have it blowing towards the open door in my garage, it definitely helps.
