Hey guys - just tried setting my Afterburner upright on freeplay. Set all dipswitches to on as indicated in the manual. Game boots up fine and if I go into test mode, shows the correct settings and that the game is on freeplay. "Freeplay" is displayed on the screen in attract mode, but so is "Insert Coin"

The start pushbutton is not illuminated as it should be to start the game and when you push the button, the game doesn't start as it should. If I coin up from the front door, the start button starts flashing as normal and you can start the game.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Yeah, Sega kinda blew that one, didn't they. Yours works the same as everybody else's, which I'm sure is not what you want to hear.

I have been considering a ROM hack for this to save high scores and fix the freeplay, based on the awesome work that was done for the Enhanced Out Run ROMs by others. I do have a hack to silence the attract mode sounds, if that interests you :)

Thanks! At least I know I'm not crazy...I';l have to check, I don't think I actually have the attract mode sounds. I am pretty sure they are off on the dip switches and I can't remember hearing them. Now I'll have to go check. Thanks again!
Cheers,
Ray
