Afterburner fans

huge fan of sega games in that era and will own one someday. Already have outrun and super hangon( simular hardware)

Speaking of Super Hang-On was there a bike version of Enduro Racer? All I ever saw was the Paper Boy style cabinet.

Edit:

I answered my own question. I have never seen this in the wild.

Holy Crap $1,295! But it is in really nice shape! I can see that it is worth it.

Motion works now :) but the pitch motor wheel slips so will order a new spring (we might have overcompressed the old spring when removing motor)...also the area where the roller rides has worn to slippery bare metal so will repaint. In process if repainting all the metal surfaces and brackets showing wear.
I know what you're talking about. I bought mine a year ago WORKING, and just finished it up last week. All I need now is new seat art. Regarding the pitch roller, you can place a couple of washers between the spring and bracket to increase the pressure on the cabinet. This is actually an "approved" method, and is in the troubleshooting section of the service manual. (Mine has this done.) In addition, someone applied a strip of grip-tape (like for a skateboard) to the cabinet where the roller rides on it. Seems to work pretty well.

whoa thanks! I thought of trying a washer but wasnt sure itd be ok and see videogameparts.com has springs....wow I really like the idea of the grip tape an might just try that. Does appear to add extra wear to the motor's rubber wheel?

I think it would wear more if it slipped, but that's what we're trying to avoid, right? :) The wear does appear to be different where the roller contacts the tape, because the roller looks rougher in that area. I do not see a significant reduction in the diameter, however. You could try washers first (mine has 2) and if that doesn't do it, there's always the tape.

that sounds like a plan :) btw I'm planning on bolting wheels (2 fixed, 2 swivel w/brake) to (2) 45" pieces of channel iron then having it welded to the underside of the frame. The channel adds 2" in height. I'm having trouble deciding between larger 8" diameter wheels vs 4". The mounting height of the 8" adds another 2" + the channel would raise the bottom a total of 12" vs 8" if I went with the 4" wheels. Besides being more flood resistant ;) I think the larger wheels would make it easier to move, but it might look goofier? But I don't want to struggle moving it with the 4" + servicing the various rollers is much easier with the game higher. I'm having trouble making up my mind..fortunately both the 8" and 4" have the same bolt pattern so if one size doesnt work I can always switch, but I'll be out for the expense of the wrong wheels. Do you have a recommendation on wheel size? What does your afterburner have?

thanks,
Tom

My Afterburner has tiny ass wheels that look like they couldn't hold a damned thing up (probably why their crushed to shit). If you have a Harbor freights near you that's a great place to get inexpensive wheels that work for the cabinet. I also have to agree this thing is like restoring a car its freaking huge. My motion was working when I bought it but when I got it home and unloaded the motion no longer worked. The game still works though other than that I haven't got into it because I have been trying to get other games out of the garage in order to make some space for the cabinet disassemblely.

Here's how I move mine you can kind of see the wheels on the huge ass dolly I built for the game. The wheels are like 4 inch solid cast iron and rubber and even they seem to be having some issues holding up the game.

I have an Afterburner upright project, working, in pretty decent shape. Only thing is, the sideart is literally peeling off, from the back edges forward. The vinyl is peeling off of the particle board, as it shrinks.

Is it realistic to expect that sideart will ever be available for this, solvent inkjet or otherwise?

I could probably restore the cabinet to look close to new, if only I could get sideart for it.

Absolutely a good idea-

My 720 project had the tiny casters that crushed under the weight of the game. Before pulling it off of the truck, I went by Harbor Freight and bought OVERSIZED ones, and attached them with 1/4" lag bolts.

The above video is of a custom pedestal arcade cabinet that i put together a little over a year ago. It shows my son playing afterburner climax on the PS3 using a flight controller mounted to the panel. It is held in place by large bolts that thread in using wing nuts and large washers. It does a great job of simulating the arcade feel. Using the stick and buttons that you can see in front of the stick, you can play any PS3, PS2, Xbox360 or original Xbox game.

Wouldn't it be cool if someone were to take an old Afterburner cabinet and upgraded the hardware to play this game? Personally, I think that would be pretty neat...

When you're ready to tear into it and get it working again, please feel free to drop me a pm if you have any questions. I had no clue where to start and it was daunting just thinking about it. But now that I'm in the midst of it, its actually not bad and kinda fun. Gotya get the motion working again for sure! btw I think Mylstar has a nos monitor plexi. I got one from vintagearcadesuperstore and it makes a huge difference.

Wheels are missing from mine, and all the brackets are bent to hell. I straightened them out as best I could for fun, but I move mine around with my forking forklift.:) I think it's clear that the casters were not the best part of the cabinet design.

lol yeah my brackets are a lost cause also...Sega definitely went cheap there...the brackets are super flimsy and not worth trying to save.. I think channel iron will work nicely, I'll poat pix when its complete if interested. The guy who sold it to me included a pallet jack to move it and it rests on a pallet..I must say theres nothing that adds arcade ambience like a yellow pallet jack and wooden pallet ;) They're outta here once the wheels are installed!

Ive got a mini cabaret that was converted from a thunderblade, Its in kinda rough shape and I cant get the sound to work. Also the yokes too loose. Needs a new boot and side art.
Sure Ill be working on it for awhile.

well my afterburner restoration continues albeit at a slow pace. I've pulled the monitor so my friend stuffmonger can recap it. Amazingly the monitor has no burn, but what a pita it was to remove the mounting screws! With the monitor out, I plan on removing the joystick, taping everything off and retouching the black interior and grey frame. I'm having trouble finding an exact match for the grey and blue used for the cab. I've fabricated a new floormat out of some textured gasket material from work. The texture isnt an exact match, but its passable and better than the torn original. unfortunately its a red/brown color so I'm painting it black.

I did pass a major milestone: the wheel assembly I fabricated is now welded to the cab :) it rolls so easy now, the difference using this versus the pallet jack that came with the game is amazing! The wooden pallet AB rested on is outta here and someone is picking up the pallet jack today. For wheels, I picked up (4) 6" poly wheels rated at 675 lbs each. 2 are swivel that can be locked to a fixed position. The other 2 are swivel but have a total lock feature that locks the wheel and direction in one step. I took some pics I'd like to share but don't know how to post. I can email them if someone is willing to post, lmk :)
