Hi,
I just recently picked up a Data East game, Speed buggy. And the sides look like they have been badly repainted and the side arts faded and ripped. I'd like to restore it. But This is all new too me. and I'm not sure where to start. Any advice on how to fix the sides? and also I'm looking for the side art that belongs with this game.
Thanks.

Looks pretty decent other than the sideart. Looks like a good CP and marquee. Maybe pickup the sideart and a bezel and you'll be lookin good.

Check out the restoration secton. Congrats on the find!

Thanks. I'll go look in there.

Holy... A real thread. :D

That side art doesn't look too bad to me... I consider it "character" if it's scratched up a bit... But I also understand that you want it perfect, and that's cool.

Honestly, if it were me, I'd just get a cheap Testers model paint set and mix colors to match fairly close, and take a small brush and fill in the spots where it's missing. Or, you can go all-out, and remove the side art, then sand and paint and apply new sideart, if you can find it, but that's very time-consuming and expensive. So you have to decide how important it is to ya...

Yeah it wouldn't bother me as much if it wasn't for the mangled stickers and I think there is supposed to be a smaller sticker on both sides that was completely peeled away (you might be able to see where they once were)

I like the "character" look. but where would be a good place to get these stickers? I know that Phoenix arcade do repo's, but not of this game. Do they do custom orders?

This is what what I would do in your case:

1. Sand down any rough areas on the sides of the cabinet.
2. Mask off the side art.
3. Get some black paint and a roller and re-paint the sides. (probably 2 layers is all you would need)
4. Remove masking and leave side art as-is.

If you are really ambitious, you could try masking off the missing pieces of side art and use spray paint to fill them in. I wouldnt recommend hand-painting to touch up the torn areas; I tried this on my Time Soldiers and it just didn't work out. It's really hard to get even layers and precise lines without messing up.

Or you could try and locate a set of new sideart, and then completely strip the sides of your cabinet and start from scratch. But like mentioned above, that would be the most expensive and time consuming choice.
