Hey guys-

I'm hoping for a little input on this. I was planning to pick up a Megatouch IV upright that has a touch screen issue today. The owner says that it comes up with an error that the touch screen could not be found. I searched the forums and saw a few old posts talking about this issue. Could this be an easy fix? Or, should I pass on it- it's only $50...

could be the connector for the touchscreen came loose or the screen itself is bad...you can get 13" replacement touchscreens, not sure how much they are though...50 bucks is the max i'd pay...at least you're getting a working 13 inch monitor out of the deal

I thought the same thing. This is one that wifey actually would play, so I think for $50 it's worth a shot.

someone on here posted that they built their own megatouch xl for not much more than that. I would grab an empty megatouch cabinet (probably free), one of those 15 inch elo touchscreen monitors and the motherboard from the bay and build your own. Just my 2 cents.

I've got a fully working IV I was going to put up on CL for $50, I'm just making sure I don't need to gank the touch screen from it first. I think $50 for a broken one is a bit much considering I think in that era the touchmaster was more fun....

I looked into that too, but at that point I'd have around $200 into one ($70 for a used monitor and $120 or so for the board.) Just hoping this would be a quick fix with little time invested to make wifey happy...

As for the repair on this one. It's more likely the white box touch screen controler (interface) or a wire problem.

One thing to note, I believe the Megatouch games prior to the XL line (the ones with numbers like IV) use CGA monitors. XL and up use VGA.

If you are not in a hurry I have two or three of them I will be scrapping soon.(couple weeks)
Can pull one for you.

Would you have the screen sensor for one. Mine is very erratic. The "Sensor" would move 2 inches to my one inch on certain areas making me think it is the touchscreen that is bad.
Don't touch my inches Phet! ;-)

Ralph - check the dipswitches on your board, there is a setting for 13/19 inch monitors and chances are its on the wrong setting. I think I ran into that.

As for the original poster, if the panel isn't working it could be as simple as just reseating the serial connector for the controller box (upright), and if its a bartop the controller is usually mounted on top the motherboard as a small addon board with a ribbon cable - that cable/plug could be loose too. The bartops are very heavy and I think sometimes they just get banged around.

Also, there is a chip on the rear left corner of the motherboard, max232 that runs the serial port. They can go bad due to static, and very cheap to replace. I *think* the chip is not there or not needed for the built-in controller, but I forget now.

$50 for a IV isn't bad - get it working and get upgrade roms to go to 7. Its not a newer one but it has a bunch of fun games and TriTowers is enough to make it worth it. I think mine has screen burn from tritowers at this point.

One of the docs on the Merit website (you should go there to get the troubleshooting manuals) mentions to make sure the touch screen cable doesn't run right next to the monitor yoke, or it may effect the accuracy.

If it's a 4, it might have the beige box, but it might be this one...

It is also VERY possible that it's a board problem. If the green light is on on the controller, and gets brighter when you touch the screen, it's probably a board problem. When I see this problem, it's the board 90% of the time, and the touchscreen/controller 10% of the time. Probably not even 10%. Maybe 2%.

Also, where in the world are you going to find 7 eproms?

D.C.

Somehow I have them on my machine?! Megatouch CRT-260 board goes up to Megatouch 7. Also to elaborate - that MAX232 serial chip I mentioned earlier is socketed so its easy to replace. Again I know one type of controller requires it and the other doesn't, but I tried it both ways and it doesn't hurt it if it doesn't need it.
