Advice on how to remove Nintendo's &@#! Strain Reliefs on Power Cord

Does anyone know how to take these "Bleeping" strain reliefs of the Nintendo power cords without a special tool. I'm trying to remove the cord from the cabinet, but the strain relief and metal mounting plate are really stumping me on how to disassemble with out cutting the cab or the cord. I tried squeezing the strain relief with a pair of needle nose pliers and all it did was mar up the strain relief. The metal plate doesn't seem to want to rotate out of the way or do anything other than be in the way. Maybe I'm missing something here. Any help is appreciated.

Take it out and put in one of these. Actually for Nintendo games I use one that is just the socket without the switch and fuse then I run it over to the original swich/fuse.

Then get one of these.

I've done this a few times. I use a serrated Swiss army knife to saw one side of the relief fitting close to the metal. If you can take a chunk off the fitting, you should be able to slide the plate over it. Be careful, this is probably not the ideal method... Obviously, you would have to replace the fitting, but you can reuse the plate.

I have replaced tons of those on medical equipment. You can also buy a bag of new strain reliefs cheap. But they are reusable if you use the correct pliars to take them off.
