I have a couple games to pick up that are an hour or 2 away. I can rent a pick up, but was wondering if anyone can give me advice on how to pack/transport them so that I don't destroy them driving them back laying in the back of the flat bed of a pick up truck? Or are they ok to just load them in and go?

First thing to do is strap them down!

Laying down or standing up just depends on how many games you have and how big the bed is.

For me single games I lay down, always inspect the game thoroughly before laying on its back to make sure there is nothing loose, monitor secure, etc. If I have to move more than one I will stand them up in the back of the truck. Usually I will strap them all together then run a strap over the top of each game and secure them to the bed. I move 3 games at a time in my Ranger this way and have never had a problem.

Most important thing to remember is to check out the game to make sure everything is secure before moving.

How many games? If you're going to rent anyways, look into getting a van or something enclosed. I usually truck mine around, but last night I borrowed the van from work to pick up my latest game. Glad I did because half-way home it suddenly started down-pouring. I would have been PISSED if I had them in the back of my truck and hadn't bothered to plastic-wrap them.

plastic-wrap them.

How could I forget, it's been a while since I have picked up a game, but I usually will try and stretch wrap the games completely prior to loading them in the truck. This saves them from the elements, keeps all pieces intact, and helps protect artwork when loading and unloading.

If it's a neo geo, I recommend taking the cartridges out. They will get loose after a few bumps. I would check how the boards are secured in the machine. If they are not, take them out.

Games

If the game has a plastic bezel like DK, DK jr. Take it out or wrap it. It wont be in the game any more after the first time you reach 50mph.

If the game is standing up, rock it back and forth with quite a bit of force before you drive off to ensure it's not going to fall over going around a curve. Someone here lost an eDot because it wasn't secured/strapped down properly .

+1 to this... Everytime I drive over the I-15 & I-60 interchange in SoCal, I half-expect to see my DK Jr. bezel lying there.

I shrink-wrap 'em every single time now.

Meh.

It is not a big deal. You can haul anything standing up with enough straps.

You sir, are a glutton for punishment. Did ANY of those boardsets work 100%? ;-)

Meanwhile, back on-topic for a second: if you're not comfortable hauling them standing up, and you have two (maybe three if you have a long-bed) to load, you can always lay them on their backs alternating them across the bed (the top of the first one hangs over the driver's side bed rail, the next one hangs over the passenger side rail, etc.) This works in a pinch if you don't have enough straps handy assuming you have a full-sized truck. I wouldn't do this in anything smaller.
