Advice- Dot matrix display not working - Data East Royal Rumble

I finally scored my first pinball machine. Data East's WWF Royal Rumble. Everything works excellently, except for the Dot matrix display.

Now, before I go and shell out $150 for a new display, besides the fuses, what can I check? All fuses are fine. Is there a certain spot I should check for voltage for the display?

Thanks in advance for ALL help!!!!!

What does yours do? I am having a problem getting mine to work as well. Is it blank, garbage on the screen or are all the dots lit up but you can still see the boot up info? Just getting the CPU and coil problems worked out on mine, but I think I have a problem on my display controller board. Mine also works fine, boots up, leds are fine, sounds are good and I have switched out a know working ribbon cable, connectors for the DMD have also been replaced with good ones Molex/pin types instead of the IDC ones. I am going to try the "fixed" CPU board tomorrow and see what the display does. Will report back. Will also reflow the solder for the ribbon cable pins and everything else just to rule them out.

Mine is completely out on my DE Star Wars. The issue is with the power supply board (which is out for repair). You might check your voltages with you multi meter to make sure that checks out okay. I would def check fuses and make sure your ribbon cables are all correctly connected too.

If you don't have a manual, you can download a copy at IPDB:

Unfortunately the schematics are kind of fuzzy.

Check the voltage at CN5 on the power supply. Check the voltage at the DMD itself. Check the voltage going into the display driver board that sits on top of the DMD. Finally, check that the ribbon cables are correctly oriented (red stripe at Pin 1). If the one going from the display board to the DMD is reversed, you'll get nothing at all on the display.

My display doesn't light at all. Game plays fine, all lights work/flash, but no screen, at all.

I think Scuba Steve might be right. That sounds more like a power supply problem. Check to see that the 5v (red and black wires) on the display board have a good connection and the yellow wire coming from the power supply board too.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

I've got voltage at all the places listed... all cables are oriented correctly.
However, on the display driver board, there 8 dipswitches in a row. What should those be set at for Royal Rumble? They are all on. Is that right?

Also, I see some corrosion on some of the IC's on this board. possible problem?

Somehow, in all of my playing around , when I plugged the board back in I got a split second of garbage on my DMD, and then went back black. this only occurred once.

my father whom has electronic knowledge has said that it's the display controller board DE part #520-5055-01

due to the corrosion on the board.. he was able to make the display light for a moment to show that it's not the display.
where can I find a new board if this is true?

You can do a quick web search for this. The last 2 digits don't matter--the variations are just jumpered differently and can be easily interchanged.

everywhere I see say out of stock.. I'll keep looking maybe I'll run across one :)

Pinball Life has them in stock, it appears. $225. Or pick it up in person at their Expo open house!

Coin-Op Cauldron will repair it for $70 plus shipping.

Any chance that it is a import? Try looking inside the coin door to the right at the place to adjust the volume. It might say the name of the country it went to. Do you have the original Power supply board or is it a replacement?

How would a re-improt cause issues? Because of the 220v instead of 110v?

It doesn't say anything about a different country...

It's the original power supply board, but I've got correct voltages coming into this board... so Im assuming it's got to be this board.... alot of the legs on the ICs are corroded.

Just got in the replacement display controller board, swapped over the rom chip, plugged it in.. guess what.

It's still not working.
What a major bummer!! :(

could the rom chip be bad?
