I've been looking for a 48 in 1 or 60 in 1 and have come across some with LCD panels instead of monitors. I would think it's a good idea but I'd like to hear your opinions.

I've also had people ask me if I would want a computer monitor to be used, a tube one, not an LCD; what's with that?

LCD Advantages

Take up less space
Easier to get ahold of new
Usually have built-in menu system for picture adjustments

LCD Disadvantage

Looks like shit for classic games (wrong pixelation and not as bright)
More expensive
Harder to repair if they break

The multi boards can put out a VGA signal. So they can use normal computer displays both LCD and CRT. The LCD systems your seeing are probably normal computer monitors. The LCD monitors made for arcade games are still really expensive and not something most folks would pay the extra money for to put in a multi that has VGA available.

The CRT monitors will look more like a real classic arcade game, so that is why they are giving you the option. Plus, throwing in an old CRT can even save them money over a new LCD if you don't care either way.

LCDs don't look as authentic because the pixels are crisp and clear. The viewing angles are different as compared to CRTs.

I have heard people say that certain viewing angles can make the picture look really crappy.

The problem would be more noticeable for horizontal games. The horizontal viewing angles are the widest. So when you turn the monitor vertical for a 48-in-1 you actually see the monitor pretty well from above, below, and perpendicular to the screen. It will suffer more from the left and right, but that affects others watching and not so much the actual player. Still not as good as a CRT, but best way to mount one if you have too...

That is based on a cocktail. LCDS were never designed to be looked at from the bottom upwards.

Yeah, that image shows it pretty well. You are actually better off flipping that horizontal LCD upside down if you can invert the signal. Looking up at the LCD from the bottom is the worst angle possible. I can't imagine anyone mounting one on a horizontal cocktail cabinet, but then again there is crapmame...

On the 48/60-1 there is a dipswitch on the PCB to invert the image.
So if your machines is going against a wall then make sure the base of the LCD is parrallel with the wall and use the dip to flip the picture to suit.

I have never has an issue with the picture being too dark with an LCD.
